WIFI coverage on the 6th floor

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: The WIFI on the 6th floor of the Bennett Library does not work properly.

A: There are currently no WiFi antennas at the east and west ends of the 6th floor so coverage is spotty. We forwarded this concern to network services and they have tuned their antennas, but further additional access points will need to be installed in those particular areas of the 6th floor. For the time being, it is best to study in other areas of the 6th floor that have better WIFI coverage.

Noise on the 3rd floor

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: I am studying on the 3rd floor of the Bennett library using the computers and in the past two days there are groups of pre-teen boys coming in to play video games on the computers and making a lot of noise (talking loudly, etc.). It’s quite disruptive.

Book display about Ramadan

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Could the library update the display table on the 3rd floor with books about Ramadan during April? A lot of SFU students themselves are observing the month.

A: Our staff will put on a table display about Ramadan during the month of April after the Nowrouz display.

Saving records when writing a research essay

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: It would be very helpful if you could have more than one list of saved records. Working on two or more papers at the same time happens a lot and if you could have a separate list for each paper would be very handy.

A: When you Sign in to the Library Catalogue, you can create a list of Favourites (the pin icon) and use the "Add Labels" feature to organize your list of saved favourites.

Silent study on the 6th floor

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: The sixth floor at the Bennett Library is supposed to be completely silent, but students regularly talk (or whisper so loudly that it defeats the purpose of whispering). Is there any way to have someone monitor this? Some students may not have a quiet place at home to study, so this is the only place they can get work done. This is the one floor in the entire campus where people should not be talking, so respecting that seems like minimum decency.

Accessing articles for alumni

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: When I try to access articles from various databases such as JStor, I see this message:

"Bad Request/Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand./Size of a request header field exceeds server limit."

Does this mean that my access to some databases has been changed? (I am an alumna.)

A: I think there are two things happening:

Business & Econ Liaison Librarian, Mark Bodnar, was very helpful

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: I've been having a difficult time with a scoping review I'm performing, getting into databases I'm not all that familiar with (like Business Source) and altogether not knowing what I'm doing. I reached out to the library about having export issues and was referred to Business & Econ Liaison Librarian, Mark Bodnar, and honestly...I'm blown away.

Q: Do Continuing Studies students in The Writers Studio have access to the SFU library?

A: If you are a Continuing Studies student that is currently enrolled in courses, you are eligible for a library card for the duration of the course. You can find more info about getting a SFU Library card here.

Monitors in the Research Commons

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Is it possible to add more monitors (those that can be directly connected to a laptop) in Research Commons in the Burnaby Library? While we have enough desktops, the number of monitors doesn't seem to meet the demand. I often need to wait for other students before getting one. Also, the new monitors are really great, but personally I am also very happy to use the old Dell ones.

Ventilation on the 7th floor

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: I was in the grad student lounge on the 7th floor to do some reading yesterday and left with a terrible headache after. I find that happens when an area has really poor ventilation (airflow). Was wondering if you could have facilities check this out as others may have to continuously hydrate to offset this discomfort? I did enjoy my experience using the floor, but I know something about the air just wasn’t right, especially when we have to wear masks in common areas too!
