Accessing articles for alumni

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: When I try to access articles from various databases such as JStor, I see this message:

"Bad Request/Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand./Size of a request header field exceeds server limit."

Does this mean that my access to some databases has been changed? (I am an alumna.)

A: I think there are two things happening:

Censoring Freedom to Read Week?

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: This link (and others) were published to a "Freedom to Read Week" listing. Unfortunately none of the SFU pages are actually readable and are inaccessible to the public. Ironic?

A: Never fear -- we aren't censoring our Freedom to Read Week information. Last week we added a link from the Library home page to a new and updated page that includes more online-friendly features. (You can also go directly to our FtRW information here.

Link to SFU Connect

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. The 'Sign In' link on the Library home page includes a link to SFU Connect.  Students are confused when they receive a '400 http error' when attempting to use that same link to access the Library system to search for journal articles. This applies to new students who never existed in SFU Connect, students who existed in SFU Connect are redirected.  May I suggest the link be removed, or the link to access Library systems further up the list?

Change my PIN Number

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I can’t figure out how to change my email address, or my PIN.

A. You can't change your address yourself through the library web page. Instructions on how to change your PIN are on our website here:

https://www.lib.sfu.ca/find/catalogue-signin (search for 'update your PIN').

New Catalogue and Privacy

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I like the new catalogue interface but I noticed it is hosted on server located outside of Canada. What personal information as defined in Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is being stored, is there an option to opt out of the new catalogue and have users been properly informed that library services may not be fulfilled with Canadian servers?

Specifically when I try to see what I have checked out, it takes me too sfu-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com which has an IP in Illinois, USA. Is my record being stored there?

Incorrect Linking for Digital Articles

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: There was an article that I searched for today and I found that the library database has linked the wrong full text link for the article title that I was looking for.

The article is "Uncovering Facebook Photo Tagging Culture and Practices among Digital Natives" by Aqdas Malik, Amandeep Dhir, and Marko Nieminen; the full text link that comes up is for "Media Re-victimization of Rape Victims in a Shame Culture? Exploring the Framing and Representation of Rape Cases in Nigerian Dailies".

Online Journal Access to Staff?

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Hello, I'm a staff member within External Relations. I understand that as a staff member I can also get access to the library. I'm trying to access an online journal from Sage Publications but it appears that in Canada it is only available through Cybera (which I'm not familiar with). Here is the link:

Online Access

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: I'm trying to get articles though SFU Library's online services. Most of them I am accessing just fine, but for two I get as far as the following pages, and then they say I don't have access to the PDFs :-(
http://jcc.sagepub.com/content/45/4/534.full.pdf+html or http://jcc.sagepub.com/content/45/4/534
http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=8805489&fileId=S1138741600000949
I tried Ask a Librarian, and they said that they had no problems, so to contact you. Please help!
