Microsoft Office on computers

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Students need Microsoft word and excel on every computer on campus! We use Microsoft word for most of our projects and essays. Not all computers on campus have Microsoft word and excel, and opening up my files with other software messes up with the file format.

A: All library lab PCs have the Microsoft Office suite of products installed on them. If you ran across one that does not, please let us know what the location is and give us the computer number which is usually on a sticker near the back right of the PC case.

Volunteering at the library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Are there any volunteer opportunities at the SFU Library available for UniverCity residences?

A: While the Library does not have any volunteer positions for non-students, the wider community may be interested in some of the opportunities through SFU's United Way campaign, including the upcoming Book Sale. See here for more information.

Thank you Fraser Library staff

Published by Dipa Barua

Comment:

I wanted to send a great big "Thank You" to the helpful staff (3 people) who assisted me today at the Surrey Fraser Library. I requested a supplemental insert instead of a textbook by mistake. The staff were able to get me the correct book and I was able to take it home without having to come back to the location. I really appreciate the time they took to look and find the correct version of what I was looking for. Thank you again!

Renaming the Bennett Library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: In light of SFUs proclaimed commitments to reconciliation and the library as a public space for community learning, it would be wonderful to see SFU put forward the action to rename the WAC Bennett Library. The opening statement on SFUs 2019/2020 Annual Report on Reconciliation states, "There is no endeavour more important to Canada’s well-being than the national process of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. With this in mind, we at Simon Fraser University have committed ourselves to serve as an instrument for reconciliation" (p.3).

Seed library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Does SFU have a seed library similar to other educational institutions such as UBC, BCIT, and Kwantlen University, promoting food security and exchange of seeds? And if not, is it possible to start this initiative at the SFU Burnaby Library? Currently, there is no seed library in the Burnaby area.

Censoring Freedom to Read Week?

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: This link (and others) were published to a "Freedom to Read Week" listing. Unfortunately none of the SFU pages are actually readable and are inaccessible to the public. Ironic?

Streaming videos through the library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Is there a way to connect to any streaming video services through the library? I can't seem to find any direct links; only title searches through the catalogue.

When placing a book on hold

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. How long does it take if it says cataloging! It says I’m #1 in queue but there was already a request before me when I clicked, and turned to 2 after I requested. Does that mean I’m first still?

Gender-neutral washrooms in the library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I've been having some access issues lately at the Bennett Library - there is currently only one gender-neutral washroom available to students in the whole library due to construction on the fourth floor. It feels humiliating to have to wait in front of the bathroom on the 7th floor several times a week, often for ten minutes or more, simply because the library does not have any other options available for trans and non-binary students. I often lose fifteen to twenty minutes of work-time just to quickly use the washroom.
