Student Learning Commons: Types of consultations available to students

The Student Learning Commons offers free one-on-one consultations at Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver to SFU students taking credit courses.

SLC consultations are available both on-campus and virtually. Both on-campus and virtual consultations are one-on-one and peer-to-peer with a focus on empowering students' confidence in their own academic work.

Learning consultations

Enhance strategies such as time management, exam preparation, note-taking, and presentation skills.

Writing consultations

Develop and improve strategies and skills for more effective academic writing, including cover letters and résumés for Co-op or other positions related to your academic program.

For assistance with job-related cover letters and résumés, consult SFU Career Services or the Career Management Centre.

What we can help you with

  • understanding assignment guidelines and getting started
  • thinking through and articulating ideas
  • identifying mistakes and patters of error in existing writing
  • planning and time management for completing assignments
  • self-editing and revision strategies for drafts of writing
  • reading, learning, and studying strategies

 What we do not do

  • check the format of your citations
  • proof-read or "correct" your paper (but we can help you edit your own work)
  • content tutoring: we don't check if your assignment answers are "correct"
  • check for plagiarism
  • help with math or statistics assignments
