New Catalogue and Privacy

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I like the new catalogue interface but I noticed it is hosted on server located outside of Canada. What personal information as defined in Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is being stored, is there an option to opt out of the new catalogue and have users been properly informed that library services may not be fulfilled with Canadian servers?

Specifically when I try to see what I have checked out, it takes me too sfu-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com which has an IP in Illinois, USA. Is my record being stored there?

Front-Line Customer Service

Q. Some staff at the desk are very arrogant and rude. I hope these people know that most students are not trying to make their lives difficult.  I am not disparaging the work that you guys do, and I am very appreciative of how hard the job can be, but please show some flexibility in dealing with students.

2017 TED Talks Hosting

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. Will SFU Library be hosting live streaming of TED Talks this year?

A. The SFU Library will not be streaming the TED Talks this year.

The streaming links have just yesterday been sent out by the TED organizers to local public libraries.  I know that West Vancouver Memorial Library will be setting up streaming (see the update on their home page at https://westvanlibrary.ca) but as of this afternoon Vancouver Public Library has not confirmed whether they would be able to organize streaming.

PostDoc Registration Option for Workshops

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I am a Postdoctoral Researcher and wanted to register for workshops that the library offers (NVivo workshops specifically). I was wondering what I should enter on the form for 'Registrant level': Graduate, Staff, or other?

A. Thanks for your feedback!  We've added a 'Postdoctoral Fellow' category in our workshop registration system.  You can now select that as an option when your register for NVivo or other Research Commons workshops.

Kind regards,

Nicole White
Head, Research Commons

Chairs at Fraser Library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. Please improve chairs in the silent study room of SFU Surrey Library. They make a lot of noise. Also please provide chairs with arm rest in other areas of the library instead of just in the silent study.
Thank You.

A. Thank you for your feedback and suggestions. New furniture purchases are not currently in budget plans; however, we will keep your suggestions in mind for future purchases.

Alumni Journal Database Access

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I graduated in 2015 and my email account is going to be shut down this month. I assume my library privileges will also change. I like the online databases for articles, and I have to sign in with that
email ID to access those. I know I can borrow books with my alumni card (from my earlier degree, even), but is there anything I can do to maintain the journal database access?
