BUS 200: Business Fundamentals

With minor variation between course sections, the BUS 200 assignments involve searching/browsing for news articles, researching company strategies, and preparing new company/market strategies based on a solid foundation of information.

Most of those tasks are well covered with existing library guides, each of which lists the most useful databases, sites, and publications alongside tips about time-saving skills, perspectives, and approaches.  Rather than duplicate all of that content here, I'll provide links to the most relevant guides and add a few comments about specific sources where needed.

News

Major news publications via the SFU Library

The Economist: We provide online access to every issue of The Economist ever published (1843-present). The Proquest CBCA access option has the most recent issues (1992-present) and allows you to either browse each issue or search across multiple issues. See this blog post for more details.

Financial Times: All SFU students also have full access to every issue of the Financial Times: the issues from 1888-2010 are in an online archive, and more recent issues (including today's issue and most FT website content, as well as an archive of issues from the last several years) are available directly via the publisher. Simply register for an account at the FT site using your SFU email address, and the FT will briefly redirect you back to the SFU site to sign in as a current SFU student, then bring you back to their site where you will be able to read the articles. See this blog post for details.

Globe & Mail: Once again, you can view the full run of the G&M as an SFU student, with issues from 1844 to 4 years ago available via an online archive, and issues from the last few decades available in multiple databases such as Canadian Newsstream. Note that there are separate online access points for recent articles that appeared in the print newspaper and articles that only appeared on the G&M website. Very recent G&M issues (the last seven days) are also available in page-image format through our PressReader database: Globe & Mail. (Follow that last link, then click on the calendar image to navigate to other recent issues of the G&M.)

New York Times: Archival access (online): 1851 to 4 years ago + current access (last few decades, up to the most recent issue) via multiple databases. As with the Globe & Mail, note the different links for articles that appeared in the print NYT (1980-present) and content that only appeared on the NYT website (2012-present). (Those last two links take you to pre-run searches for NYT articles in our Factiva database, with the most recent articles at the top. Click on Modify Search and add terms to focus your search on specific topics.)

Wall Street Journal: Archival access (online): 1889 to 12 years ago + current access (last few decades, up to the most recent issue) via our Factiva database. Factiva provides online access to articles published in the print WSJ newspaper from 1979 to the present, and access to articles published on the WSJ website from 1997 to the present.

Databases

The SFU Library offers many more news publications than just those five titles! Check out the following databases to search for news across thousands of news publications, many of which are not free online.

Factiva: Newspapers, newswires, industry news publications, and more from around the world. See this video for some tips on effective use of Factiva.

Canadian Newsstream: Canadian news sources

Nexis Uni: International news coverage. Some overlap with Factiva, but also includes many unique publications. To focus on the news portion of Nexis Uni (omitting legal and other publications), start with this more targeted landing page.
