This workshop begins by recognizing that students are often encouraged to find their own “voice” in their writing, but that it is much rarer to get a clear explanation of what “voice” in writing is or how a writer might go about trying to find theirs. Multilingual students may experience an additional layer of challenge in this “quest for voice” simply because they may have multiple writerly voices and styles – in different stages of development – that accompany their multiple languages. This challenge can also be an opportunity because having multiple voices gives a writer interesting linguistic choices for their writing. But, when assignments focus on what is known as Standardized Academic English it can limit those choices and make writing feel like a daunting task.
The aim of this workshop is to support your understanding of “voice” in writing and to empower you to make informed decisions as a writer.
