Scholarly or peer-reviewed?

Evaluating sources

Evaluating sources: for the basic questions you should be asking.

Journals

What is a scholarly (or peer-reviewed) journal?

Sometimes the article databases allow you to limit search results to "scholarly", "academic", and "peer-reviewed. If such an option is not visible within the database then search for the journal name within Ulrich's Periodicals Directory database.  It may provide that information.

Books

University of Cambridge Library:  Q. How do I know if an article or book is scholarly?

  • Author's credentials: Advanced degree? University affiliation?
  • Some university presses and scholarly association may have a peer-review process.

Search by topic, using Basic or Advanced Search.  For known items it is best to use "Browse by title" search.

Try searching by keywords and then limit by "Subject" (left-hand column) and "Resource type" of "books":

Examples:

Combine different concepts using AND
Combine same concepts using OR
Use quotation marks to search for a phrase
Use brackets for synonyms
Use asterisk (*) for different endings of words
