Simple tool to create links to Factiva articles

Published by Mark Bodnar

creen capture of the Factiva database logoSharing is at the heart of all libraries, including ours here at SFU. Until recently, though, sharing links to articles found in our powerful Factiva database — home of the Wall Street Journal and thousands of other business, industry, and general news publications — was complex & frustrating.

Problem solved! Thanks to our wonderful eBranch team here in the library, we now have a simple little tool that can create a link to a specific Factiva article for you in seconds.

To create a permanent link to an article in Factiva:

  1. Find the Document number at the end of the article in Factiva (example: TORSUN0020220928ei9s0000g)
  2. Enter the Document number into the new link creator
  3. Click on the copy icon to select the link and copy it to your clipboard

Your new article-direct link can be shared with any current SFU student, faculty member, or staff member, or you can add it to your Canvas course reading list.

This new tool lives in our FAQs. It  can also be found by searching the library site for terms such as Factiva links, plus we've added links to it on Factiva's main access page and in the catalogue records for each of the 33,000+ publications covered by Factiva (samples: Wall Street Journal & Barron's).

Your turn! If you'd like to try the new link generation tool, paste in any of the following document numbers.

  • J000000020221215eicf0000y
  • CPR0000020231026ejaq00mu9
  • GLOB000020230429ej4t0002b
  • TOR0000020230117ej1h0005v
  • WSJO000020221117eibh0053d
  • TORSUN0020220928ei9s0000g

Kudos to anyone who can figure out what these 6 articles have in common!

As always, let me know if you have any questions!

Mark

P.S.: The fine print: This tool works best for articles that open within the Factiva interface. As with most things in life, there are a few exceptions (and workarounds). Email me or contact my colleagues in the library if you need help.
