Launching, financing, and running a new business venture? You're not alone!
Published by Mark BodnarEntrepreneurs can be found in almost every SFU faculty and department, which is probably not a surprise given that we're Canada's top university for innovation! If you're among the many who are pivoting your way through the difficult process of starting a new enterprise (social or commercial), or if you've just invented a new product and aren't sure what to do next, I hope you know that the SFU Library is here to support you!
For instance, did you know that you have access to many recent and practical books (both online and in print) on launching, financing, and running a new business venture? Try this broad SFU Library catalogue search to get a quick sense of what's available through your library, or click on some of the covers below to access some of our most recent purchases on this important topic.
A quick scan of those covers should give you a sense of the range of entrepreneurial subtopics covered, from basic how-to titles aimed at first-timers to books focused on helping academics commercialize inventions from their research labs to what to do when you are partway through the process and things go, well, sideways. And many of the titles dive deeper into specific aspects of the process such as where to find financing and how to manage & protect your new intellectual property.
Again, the covers above are all from titles published in the last couple years, but slightly older titles are often just as valuable. For some pre-2023 highlights, check out this 2022 post, this 2019 post and this 2018 post.
Of course, we are about far more than just books and ebooks here in the library: we deal in information in all formats! For instance, check out these recent "new venture" case studies from our Sage Business Cases collection. Here are just a couple samples from the hundreds of entrepreneurship case studies available:
- Potomac Sprout Company : Starting and Growing a Business
- Aisle: A Canadian B Corp Pivots to Scale its Impact
And for more ebooks, audiobooks, and videos, try our O'Reilly Online Learning database,1 where you'll find such titles as...
- Disciplined entrepreneurship startup tactics : 15 tactics to turn your business plan into a business (ebook)
- Creating business plans : gather your resources, describe the opportunity, get buy-in (audiobook)
- Agile for everybody—prototypes and minimum viable products for the real world (video)
- The art of startup fundraising : pitching investors, negotiating the deal, and everything else entrepreneurs need to know (audiobook)
OK... I'll stop for now. This really is just a tiny sample of the many resources your SFU Library has to support you. You're not alone!
