New name & more content: Canadian Newsstand now Canadian Newsstream
Published by Mark BodnarJust a quick heads-up about some changes to our main Canadian news database:
New name: Canadian Newsstand is now Canadian Newsstream
New content: The old Newsstand product contained major papers from across Canada (G&M, National Post, Vancouver Sun, etc.) as well as many small-market papers from here in BC (Burnaby Now, Vancouver Courier, etc.) The new Canadian Newsstream product has all that, as well as dozens more small-market papers from throughout Canada (Airdrie City View to York Guardian) and transcripts from several major CBC and CTV news shows.
Why you should care:
- As you may have heard me say in classes, business is focused on change... to plan a strategy, devise a marketing plan, or create a new policy, you really must have some idea of what's happening this minute. You can't simply rely on older information about the economy, industry, competitors, or consumers without having scanned the news for the newest gleanings of information. Has your competitor just announced a new product (or a bankruptcy!)? Have new statistics been released that run counter to all the trends you've been tracking? Check the news first for such things!
- And I've also mentioned in classes that some company information is simply never published, especially for private companies. However, local news sources often have announcements about major personnel changes, articles about planned facility improvements, and plain old rumours -- all the sorts of information that can help you at least estimate what's happening inside the company. If I was researching Blackberry, for instance, I'd want to keep an eye on the Waterloo Chronicle.
But wait... there's more!
- Canadian Newsstream is handy because it's so focused on Canada, but sometimes you need to cast a wider net. Consider Factiva and LexisNexis, both of which contain thousands of different general, business, and industry publications.
- And if you prefer to read page images of current newspapers -- complete with ads and the ability to click on the corner of a page to "turn" it, then PressDisplay is the database for you!
As always, if you have questions, I (might) have answers! Send me a note...
