About the Fraser Library's fabricommons

The fabricommons is a hands-on learning space located in the Fraser Library (SFU Surrey) developed in collaboration with the School of Interactive Arts & Technology. Find us in Fraser Library, room 3960.

All SFU students, faculty and staff regardless of skill level or discipline, are welcome to use the space, services, tools, and training to make, create, prototype, and play. With a focus on material creation and textiles, fabricommons feaures the tools, facilities, and expertise to create opportunities for learning, interaction, leadership, and experimentation.

Available equipment

3D printers 
Three bookable 3D printers. These are FFF machines and use a PLA filament as printing material.

Sewing machines 
Two Baby Lock Soprano sewing machines for reservation.

Embroidery machine 
One Baby Lock Venture digital embroidery machine.

Serger/overlocker 
One Baby Lock Triumph Serger that is available by appointment. A serger seams, trims excess fabric simultaneously, and creates an overcast stitch over the raw edge of material.

Heavy duty sewing machine 
One TandyPro Heavy Duty (thick fabric) sewing machine. This machine is ideal for use with thick fabrics like upholstery or leather.

Direct to film printer & heat press 
One Direct to Film printer and Heat Press setup for printing and transferring those prints to fabric.

Assorted hand tools 
A wide array of hand tools and accessories that support our larger pieces of equipment. Some of these include, an iron, ironing board, heat imprinter, table top cutter, scissors, seam rippers, glue guns, drills, hammers, pliers, utility knives, tweezers, clamps, etc.

Coming soon to the fabricommons will be a FeltLoom and a Plotter/Cutter.

 Online training (in Canvas)

Before using our tools and services, you will need to complete online training that covers:

  • how fabricommons works
  • safety guidelines you need to follow
  • basic working principles of the equipment you will be using.

You just need an active Canvas account.

Go to the equipment section above for links to training and booking details for the specific equipment and services you want to use.

 In-person orientation

When you come to fabricommons, wait for our facilitator to set you up.

They will check that you have the appropriate training and control that the equipment booked is ready for you.


Booking tools and services

Booking (reservations) requirements are different depending on the demands of the equipment. Generally, you will need to complete the training for a piece of equipment before you can make a booking. 

  • 3D printers, sewing machines, embroidery machine, DTF printer, and heat press can be booked using our online reservation system after you complete the online training.
  • Hand tools, rigid heddle loom, iron, plotter cutter and more are available on first-come, first-served scheduling.
  • Demonstrations or course-based one-on-one appointments can be made by contacting theMakerspace LibrarianMikael Kriz, at mkriz@sfu.ca
