Business & Econ Liaison Librarian, Mark Bodnar, was very helpful

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: I've been having a difficult time with a scoping review I'm performing, getting into databases I'm not all that familiar with (like Business Source) and altogether not knowing what I'm doing. I reached out to the library about having export issues and was referred to Business & Econ Liaison Librarian, Mark Bodnar, and honestly...I'm blown away.

Ventilation on the 7th floor

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: I was in the grad student lounge on the 7th floor to do some reading yesterday and left with a terrible headache after. I find that happens when an area has really poor ventilation (airflow). Was wondering if you could have facilities check this out as others may have to continuously hydrate to offset this discomfort? I did enjoy my experience using the floor, but I know something about the air just wasn’t right, especially when we have to wear masks in common areas too!

Volunteering at the library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Are there any volunteer opportunities at the SFU Library available for UniverCity residences?

A: While the Library does not have any volunteer positions for non-students, the wider community may be interested in some of the opportunities through SFU's United Way campaign, including the upcoming Book Sale. See here for more information.

Renaming the Bennett Library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: In light of SFUs proclaimed commitments to reconciliation and the library as a public space for community learning, it would be wonderful to see SFU put forward the action to rename the WAC Bennett Library. The opening statement on SFUs 2019/2020 Annual Report on Reconciliation states, "There is no endeavour more important to Canada’s well-being than the national process of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. With this in mind, we at Simon Fraser University have committed ourselves to serve as an instrument for reconciliation" (p.3).

Gender-neutral washrooms in the library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I've been having some access issues lately at the Bennett Library - there is currently only one gender-neutral washroom available to students in the whole library due to construction on the fourth floor. It feels humiliating to have to wait in front of the bathroom on the 7th floor several times a week, often for ten minutes or more, simply because the library does not have any other options available for trans and non-binary students. I often lose fifteen to twenty minutes of work-time just to quickly use the washroom.

Opening Windows on Upper Floors of Bennett

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. Why does the Library limit the window openings on the upper floors? It is really hot up here! Maybe some more fans would be nice. Can we open the windows more?

A.  In regards to the widows not fully opening on the 6th floor, students were climbing out on the ledge, so we had to restrict the window opening for safety reasons. We will add additional fans to hopefully alleviate some of the heat discomfort.

Best regards,

Self-Checkout Kiosks for Reserves/Holds

Published by Dipa Barua

Comment: Every time I scan my item (after scanning my Student ID card), the on-screen message indicates to push the item forward. No matter which way I try to 'scan' or 'swipe' my book, an error message pops up to scan again, until the kiosk prompts to have a library attendant scan the item for me. Even a library staff member who attempted to use the kiosk was unable to successfully scan the library material.

Volunteering at the Library

Q: I am very interested in doing some volunteering in one of the university libraries. Are there any positions available?

No A/C in SFU Bennett Library

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: To whom it may concern.  The weather inside the library is really inconvenient. I think that the air condition system does not work appropriatelly. Also, you can see some individuals are having their meals inside the library and in this really inconvenient condition some spicific smells can distract you easilly.
