Library hours and service availability at all locations will change temporarily for the Spring 2024 semester due to staffing shortages.
Service hours, including access to course reserves
Bennett Library (SFU Burnaby): Access to services mediated by library staff, including:
- access to physical or paper-based course reserve readings
- items on hold
- in-person check-out and check-in of books and other materials
will be available at the Access Services front desk at the main entrance from Monday-Thursday: 9AM-9PM, Friday: 9AM-7PM, and Saturday-Sunday: 10AM-7PM.
Self-checkout of library materials will be available during building hours.
Fraser Library (SFU Surrey) and Belzberg Library (SFU Vancouver): Service desk hours and access to course reserves will be the same as library building hours.
Why have hours been reduced?
Library hours at all locations were reduced in January 2024 for two reasons:
- First, a temporary staffing shortage caused by the SFU-wide hiring freeze meant we did not have people available in time to maintain full hours for the first several weeks of the year.
- Second, like many other units across campus, the library is dealing with a substantial budget cut. As most of our operating expenses go to salaries, we must reduce salary costs to address this budget cut, and that means reducing hours.
Future plans for changes
In mid-February we are adding hours to the schedule at both Fraser and Belzberg Libraries, including weekend hours.
We have heard from some students that they would also like us to restore the 11:45pm closing time at Bennett Library (now changed to 10:45). In response to this, we are looking into options for some extended study hall hours around exam time. If this proves feasible, more news will follow later in the term.
In all cases, we are considering past patterns of use and input from frontline staff to make necessary reductions at times that will have the least possible impact on students and other library users.
Thank you for your understanding while we work through the current budget situation.
