Noise in Fraser Library group study area

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: The new group study room in the Fraser Library is cool but many times, groups of people go just to socialize and it gets super loud. Could you implement a closed door policy?

A: Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience. In group study designated areas discussion is encouraged with the expectation that this discussion does not become overly loud and disruptive. When this happens, I understand how this is distracting to you and others. Our study area policy and locations are available here.

We are trying to keep the doors of the new group study open (as we do in the other group study space in the Student Learning Commons) to signal to users they can enter the space and to best ensure safety of all (with the doors open, staff can hear if there are any issues). One or both doors can be temporarily closed, with the expectation that group study users are made aware of their volume. Therefore at any time, if the sound is overly loud, please do not hesitate to connect with library staff.

This is a new space and we are trying to negotiate the use and learn how people will respond in and to the space – so your continued feedback is valuable and informs our decisions. I will make a more concerted effort to regularly monitor the space and will remind library staff to do the same.
