Data Ownership Series Part 1: Data Ownership Writ Large

The first of a five-part series on data ownership presented by Research Data Canada, this webinar will provide an introduction to the topic of data ownership and intellectual property in the research context. Presented in a discussion panel format, panelists will respond to questions probing the background, context, and current state of data ownership from a variety of stakeholder perspectives.This discussion will provide a solid foundation upon which to build following sessions on focused data ownership topics, including Indigenous data ownership, the academic post-secondary context, standards and protocols, and the open science and open data context. Join us as we embark on our exploration, examination, and discussion of the essential and often complex world of data ownership and intellectual property in the research context today.

Ownership of Research Data, Part 2: Indigenous Research Data
This webinar will focus on Indigenous data ownership in the context of Canadian First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. Presented in a discussion panel format, panelists representing a range of stakeholder perspectives will discuss the nature of data ownership in their communities, the challenges facing them and the solutions available, and ways to foster better data sovereignty moving forward.

Ownership of Research Data, Part 3: The Academic Post-Secondary Context
This webinar will focus on research data ownership in the context of academic post-secondary institutions, with representation from both university and college perspectives.Jeffrey Taylor, Associate Vice President of Research and Innovation at Nova Scotia Community College, and Mark Joseph Daley, Vice-President, Research at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) as well as Professor at Western University, will explore issues related to data ownership and intellectual property in their respective academic post-secondary settings, highlighting challenges and opportunities.

Ownership of Research Data, Part 4: Standards and Protocols
This webinar will approach research data ownership in the context of standards and protocols, such as the Data Use Ontology (DUO), W3C PROV, and others. Peter Goodhand,Chief Executive Officer for the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH), and Guillame Bourque, Professor of Human Genomics at McGill University, will discuss how various standards and protocols impact, influence, and improve research data ownership and issues of intellectual property, with particular focus on the genomics field.

Ownership of Research Data, Part 5: The Open Science and Open Data Context
This webinar, the final in the series,  will address research data ownership in the context of Open Science and Open Data. Speakers will include Richard Gold, James McGill Professor in the Faculties of Law and Medicine at McGill University, and a 2nd speaker to be confirmed. The speakers will discuss how research data ownership and intellectual property factor into the open science and open data, particularly in terms of policy development, as well as the challenges and opportunities of open science and open data as they relate to innovation.
