Problem with fast search feature

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Hi,

Yesterday from approximately 7pm to 10:30pm, the fast search was not working. It would end up showing the page source of coding instead. I confirmed this with a friend and tried to access fast search on different browsers and devices yet they all had the same outcome. Just thought I would let you know!

A: Hello,

I'm sorry you had problems with Fast Search yesterday. It seems to be working today, June 19.

Please let me know if you continue to have problems.

Library Website Search Suggestions

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: I'd like to encourage the library to re-design its web site and specifically its search page. I have no idea what sort of researcher the current page is designed for, but it is certainly not me. I generally go to the library site because I have some specific source in mind and am trying to find it or, in the case of electronic journals, gain access to it, but the current site seems to be trying to be a mini-google but where the algorithm that runs it bears only the most tangential relation to the request.

Library Proxy Issue

Published by Dipa Barua
Q: I believe SFU Library is experiencing a proxy issue (site may be too busy?). It's been like this most of Saturday the 18th and carrying over to the 19th. Is there an estimate as to when this will be fixed? Thank you.

A:I'm sorry you were experiencing problems accessing the library's resources.  There were some issues with the server on the weekend, but they have been resolved now.

Can you try again and please let me know if you continue have any issues.

Lynda.com Database Access

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Do you know if the Lynda.com database access will be extended?

A: Thanks for your question.  We are doing everything we can to try and renew our subscription to lynda.com. It is a pricey resource, but one that is well used by a large number of faculty, students, and staff at SFU. We are hoping to make an announcement of whether we have been able to renew it in the next month or so on our lynda.com page: http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/10456.

Refworks is not working

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. Hello, I am attempting to work on a research proposal due on Wed. Refworks is currently down. (404 URL not found) There is no announcement that there is maintenance today. Refworks also happened on the July long weekend in the morning. I work full time and really depend on weekends to get work done.

Could you get back to me on this lack of service. I called the library just now (Sun Sept 1 11:52). Without refworks I will have to retrace my steps on the work I do today to add articles to my db and add citations to the text. This is a lot of extra work.

Using the iPad to Access Library Items

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I have just started trying out an i-pad. Two questions

(a) Choosing "electronic journals" and then Quaternary Science, I found a
paper, got the pdf file and was able to read it. How do I save the pdf file
on the i-pad so I can read it at my leisure and perhaps e-mail it? things I
can do on my regular computer.

Refworks Link Not Working

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. Hello, the Refworks links on the http://www.lib.sfu.ca/my-library/refworks page (both the "Login to Refworks" and the big "Refworks" button) appear to be dead; I get the 404- Not Found error.

Regards,

A. I checked the Refworks links you referred to and they are working today. If you are still having problems please let me know and I will investigate further.

Thanks,
Janice

Separate web space for new purchase suggestions

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I think you should have a separate spot for new purchase suggestions, rather than just lumping them in together with other feedback about the libraries.

A. Thank you for your comment regarding new purchase suggestions on the SFU Library's feedback page at:

http://blogs.sfu.ca/departments/library/ .
