Introduction
This is the Library report for the proposed Master of Arts in the Humanities. This assessment was first prepared in 2006, and was first revised in March 2008. It has now been updated to reflect revisions to the program proposal in April 2009.
The SFU Library's current collecting activities are at a very minimal level to support a graduate program in the Humanities. Particular weak areas of collecting are in religious studies, classics, and Southeast Asian Philosophies. Although the modest new course proposals included in this program do not justify additional funding for acquisitions, the Library and the Department of Humanities share the goal of strengthening SFU Library collections in support of Humanities. We will work together to identify opportunities to do so, possibly including seeking outside funding to develop or deepen collections in specific areas.
Bibliographic Tools
The library subscribes to a number of databases that will prove to be useful for this program including Academic Source Elite, Humanities and Social Science Index, Philosopher's Index, JSTOR, and Project Muse.
The ATLA Religion Database was purchased in 2007 and will also be useful for this program.
