Introduction to reference management software
Reference/citation management software helps you organize the information sources that you find and automates the process of creating your bibliography. Many reference management software packages are available, each of them with their own strengths and weaknesses. Below are two commonly used reference managers:
Zotero
- Install Zotero:
- a. Create a free account with Zotero
- b. Download Zotero 7 and Zotero Connector
- c. Install Zotero Word plugin: The word processor plugins are bundled with Zotero and should be installed automatically for each supported word processor on your computer when you first start Zotero. You can reinstall the plugins later from the Cite > Word Processor Plugins section of the Zotero settings
- d. Install Better BibTeX Plugin to Zotero for some advanced features, such as exporting journal abbreviations in BibTeX files, if you want to use LaTeX instead of MS Word
- Quick start guide
- Support documentation
Mendeley
- Install Mendeley:
- a. Create a free account with Mendeley
- b. Download Mendeley Reference Manager
- c. Sign into Mendeley Reference Manager; Install Web Importer and Mendeley Cite from the Tools on the top
- Help guides
- Mendeley LibGuide
It should be noted that SFU Library's Research Help supports Zotero. Refer to the guide for details. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about using Mendeley.

Writing
The Library provides access to hundreds of books on scientific and technical writing. One way to locate writing guides is to try a Subject search in the Library Catalogue. Some good subject headings are:
- Communication in science
- Communication of technical information
- Technical writing
- Technical writing -- Handbooks, manuals, etc
- Dissertations, academic -- Handbooks, manuals, etc.
