Introduction
This is the Library’s assessment for the Program Proposal for Graduate degrees (MA, MEd, PhD) in Educational Technology and Learning Design. The program was jointly developed and will be jointly offered by the Faculty of Education and the School of Interactive Arts & Technology at SFU Surrey. The existing Education and Technology Master’s program in the Faculty of Education will be replaced by this new program.
As the campus location of the program (Burnaby or Surrey) has not yet been confirmed, this report assesses the costs for each campus separately. Proposed plans indicate an eventual steady state of 50 Master’s students and 12 PhD students in the program, once fully enrolled.
Monographs
Detailed reading lists were attached to the proposed course outlines. This assessment is based on comparing the SFU Library’s holdings to those lists, recommending acquisition of any titles not already in the collection, and attaching a cost to supplementing the Surrey collection in the event that the program is to be offered there.

In addition to building a core collection of books on educational technology and the theory and pedagogy of learning technologies, the Surrey Library will also require ongoing funding to maintain a collection of monographs on these subjects. There are two main headings in the Blackwell's profile (SFU's major book wholesaler) that describe these subjects: Educational technology - General (approx. 90 books/year) and Computers in Education (approx. 160 books/year) Although the Surrey Library has recently added these two headings to its profile, acquisitions from them are currently very selective. Comprehensive collecting will be required to maintain a research collection suitable for supporting a graduate program. 100 books/year at average book price $80.
Ongoing cost for Surrey: $8,000
Of the remaining courses in the proposal, there are 5 that would also have a significant impact on the Surrey Library if they were to be offered at that campus (EDUC 864, 901, 902, 867, 975). If the Faculty of Education plans to deliver these courses in Surrey, there will be additional one-time and ongoing library costs (not enumerated here). EDUC 899 & 983 do not have library costs associated with them.

Syllabus
The Education serials were reviewed in Spring 2004 to ensure that SFU has access to all the online content that is available from each publisher. Most of the titles on this list include electronic access, and are therefore accessible from Burnaby and Surrey campuses, as well as off-campus. However, publishers are currently adding online content at a rapid rate. By the time these courses are offered, the Library will review the titles listed above again, and anticipates that some additional funds will be required to upgrade to online access in a few cases where that format has been recently launched.
Ongoing cost: $1,000/year
New Serial titles
There are two titles missing from the SFU Library serials collection that should be added, no matter what the location of this program:
ALT-J : The Journal of the Association for Learning Technology ISSN: 0968-7769 $281/year (print + online)
AACE Digital Library (American Association of Computing in Education) $1,700/year
Ongoing cost: $1,981/year
In addition, a small number of the important journals listed above have very limited holdings. The Library should acquire deeper backfiles of some of these journals (e.g. Journal of interactive learning research SFU has 2004-)
One-time cost: $2,000
Bibliographic Tools
The Library has a current license for several databases that could be used by for finding reading material for this course: ERIC, CBCA Fulltext Education, ACM Online Guide to Computing Literature, Human-Computer Interaction Bibliography, IEE/IEEE Electronic Library in addition to more general indexes such as Web of Science and the Humanities and Social Sciences Index.
