Q: Although I do not have an academic position at the moment, I am still interested in conducting research. Often I have found useful references for my research by perusing books in the Mathematics section (QA...) at SFU's WAC Bennett Library, but have been unable to do so for it seems like 5 years, due to Covid and more recently due to construction. I would like to find out what kind of personal protective equipment I would need to wear in order to be able to access the mathematics books that are on the 5th floor; i.e., the same protective equipment that construction workers must wear in order to work there. My intentions would be, with your permission, to simply peruse the books and possibly take some of them out, in order to help with my research.

A: The 5th floor is currently under construction and it is an asbestos remediation site. There is no access for anyone other than the contractors working on that floor. All the books have been stored in boxes off-site, except for some frequently circulating books which were moved to the 6th floor – you are welcome to come in as a member of the general public and browse those books. The fifth floor books have been inaccessible since November 2023, which is less than 5 years.
