Library Course and Program Assessment for
Master of Urban Studies Proposal
March 5, 2004
Introduction
This is the Library's assessment of collection needs to support the proposed Master of Urban Studies program. The assessment is based on an analysis of the SFU Library's holdings in the areas covered by the new courses proposed for the program. The ideal situation would be to have all resources for this program housed at the Belzberg Library; as a minimum, required readings should all be available there. However, the Bennett Library collection includes much material that will be of use for the proposed courses, and these secondary materials can be delivered downtown, and have therefore been considered in the preparation of this assessment.
A comprehensive library assessment was done at the time the Graduate Diploma of Urban Studies was initiated, and has resulted in adequate funding and collection development to support the Urban Studies courses now offered. This has also served to build up a core collection of resources at Belzberg that will form a solid base for most of the new proposed courses.
The new courses will be taught once a year or once every two years, with and estimated enrollment of 15-20 students in each.

Urban Studies 685 Health Policy in Urban Societies
The collection at Belzberg to support this course is primarily related to ageing. Some more general material has recently been acquired at Belzberg in support of the Master of Public Policy Program, and at Bennett under the IHRE allocation in the Library budget, however, additional collecting for Belzberg Library in this subject area will be required. There is not one single Blackwell's or Coutt's heading to capture this material, but an ongoing cost can be estimated: 8 x $80 = $640/year. The following book should be purchased for Belzberg.
Hofrichter, R., ed., Health and Social Justice: Politics, Ideology and Inequity in the Distribution of Disease, San Francisco, Jossey-Bass, 2003. 0787967335 $73
In addition, there is a need to establish a core collection of material on the topic of this course. One-time cost: 20 x $80 = $1600.
One-time cost: $1673
Ongoing cost: $640
