Library Assessment for SIAT Undergraduate Program
200 Level Courses
March 16, 2004
Introduction
This is the Library's assessment of the March 2004 new course proposals for 200-level courses from the School for Interactive Arts and Technology.
New Courses Group 1: Replacements for IART/ITEC/MTEC/INTD 2xx-1
The Group 1 courses are replacements for existing one-credit module courses that have been offered since the incorporation of the Surrey campus into SFU. The existing Surrey library collections budget and collection development activity is covering the subject of these courses adequately for the current student numbers. However, with the substantially larger number of students proposed in the new courses, present activity will have to be increased. For example, courses with an estimated enrollment of 200 students require three copies of course texts on reserve; average cost $180/course. In other areas such as critical and creative thinking, the Surrey Library is now collecting only a handful of books each year. With an expected enrollment of 100 students per year, this activity needs to be increased.
IAT 202-3 Programming Multimedia subsequently changed to CMPT/IAT 265
IAT 203-3 Cultural Icons and Popular Arts
IAT 208-3 Drawing as Inquiry
IAT 209-3 Critical and Creative Thinking
IAT 230-3 Design for Digital Environments
IAT 241-3 Animation
IAT 242-3 Moving Images
IAT 243-3 Sound Interaction
CMPT/IAT 261-3 Spatial Computing
The following titles on the new course reading lists that are not yet in the SFU Surrey collection should be added to the Surrey collection.
The Architecture of Image - Existential Space in Cinema, J. Pallasmaa. Wiley Canada, 2002. 0-471-49286-8 2002. $80
Digital aesthetics, Sean Cubitt. (Theory, culture & society) Sage Pubns, 1998. 0761958991. $88
Mathematical Elements for Computer Graphics, Rogers & Adams, 2nd ed. McGraw-Hill Ryerson, 1990. 0-07-053529-9. $100
One-time cost: $268
Ongoing cost: $600/year
New Courses - Group 2: Additional Courses
The second group of courses is made up of new, rather than replacement courses, and represents subject areas not covered adequately by present collections and materials budget allocations at the Surrey Library.
IAT 200-3 Cognition for Design Science
The Surrey collection includes a very small number of books on cognition. The heading Cognition - General 27521802 should be added to the Blackwell forms profile for Surrey and a selection of newly published books added to the collection from these announcements each year. 10 x $65
Copies of two items on the reading list will also need to be acquired for Surrey.
Understanding cognitive science, M. Dawson. Blackwell, 1998. 063120895X $45
How the mind works, S. Pinker. Norton, 1997. $25
One-time cost: $70
Ongoing cost: $650/year
IAT 201-3 Usability in Interactive Environments
The Surrey collection includes 48 books with the Library of Congress Subject Heading Human Computer Interaction, and 31 books with the heading Computer Software-Development and is actively collecting in this area. The following books from the reading list should be acquired for the Surrey collection.
Leonardo's laptop : human needs and the new computing technologies / Ben Shneiderman, 2002. MIT Press. 0262194767. 2002. $33
Where the action is : the foundations of embodied interaction / Paul Dourish. Bradford Bks/MIT Press, 2001. 0262041960. $49
Two additional copies of this book will be required for reserve to accommodate expected enrollment of 200:
Bringing design to software / eds. Winograd et al. (ACM Press Books) A C M Press/Addison-Wesley, 1996. 0201854910. 1996. $46 x 2 = $92
Of the 23 books in the SFU Library found with keyword searching for "usability testing," only 3 are held in the Surrey collection. As a core collection for this course, 10 of the most recent of these should be added to the Surrey collection. 10 x $55 = $550
One-time cost: $724
IAT 204-3 Encoding Media Practice
The titles on the course reading list are already held in the SFU Surrey collection, and the Surrey library is actively collecting in this subject area.
IAT 206-3 Media Across Cultures
This will be a new subject area for the Surrey Library, as evidenced by the fact that none of the books on the course reading list are in the Surrey collection. There is no single Blackwell's subject heading that covers this subject, but the annual cost can be estimated nonetheless: 10 x $75 = $750
Calliope's sisters: a comparative study of philosophies of art, R. Anderson. Prentice Hall, 1989. 0131554255 $ 63
Mathematics elsewhere: an exploration of ideas across cultures, M. Ascher. Princeton Univ. Press, 2002. 0691070202. $33
Knowing Music, Making Music: Javanese Gamelan and the Study of Musical Competence and Interaction, B. Brinner. Univ. of Chicago Press, 1995. 0-226-07509-5. $86
African Fractals: modern computing and indigenous design, R. Eglash. Rutgers Univ. Press, 1999. 0-8135-2613-2. $80
Voices in Bali: energies and perceptions in vocal music, E. Herbst. Wesleyan Univ. Press, 1997. 0-8195-6316-1 $60
Wabi-Sabi: for artists, designers, poets and philosophers, K. Leonard. Stone Bridge Press, 1994 1-880656-12-4 $20
One-time cost: $342
Ongoing cost: $750
IAT 231-3 Visualizing Interaction
There is no Library of Congress Subject Heading for Visual Thinking. Of the 18 books in the SFU Library found under a keyword search, 3 are held in Surrey. The closest LCSH is Visual Perception: 29 of the 313 books at SFU are held in Surrey; most of these deal with design, visual culture and computation, and will directly support this course. Many recent imprints are included, indicating that this subject is covered adequately by current collecting activities. The course text is already in the Surrey collection (2 copies). There are no costs associated with this course.
IAT 232-3 Prototyping and Human Factors
Surrey Library holds 11 current books found with the keyword search "human factors," as well as 48 under the Library of Congress Subject Heading Human Computer Interaction. The collection also includes 8 titles found with the keyword search "prototyping and software." These results indicate that Surrey is actively collecting in this area. There are no costs associated with this course.
IAT 244-3 Digital Photography I: Post Photography
The Surrey Library is actively collecting in this area. There are no costs associated with this course.
Serials
The collection of print journals at the Surrey Library, together with the online journals in the overall SFU Library collection, will be adequate to support most student needs arising from these new courses. The print journals at Bennett Library will also be drawn on by document delivery as supplementary resources. There are no serial costs associated with these courses.
Bibliographic Tools
The SFU Library has a current license for some article indexes that could be used by for finding research material for this course such as the Art Index, MathSciNet, Human Computer Interaction bibliography and as well as more general databases such as Web of Science. However, there is a new abstracting and indexing tool now available, the Design and Applied Arts Index, which should be acquired in support of these courses, and the strong emphasis on design in two of the four streams of the SIAT undergraduate program.
