The initial target enrollment for the program is 60 students, and full capacity (in year 6) is estimated at 320.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences will hire 22 new faculty members during years two, three, and four the program's rollout.

The Library has concerns regarding completing a firm assessment of required resources without faculty being in place for consultation. What follows is a general assessment based on the limited information available at this time, and assessed the program as a whole vs. by individual courses.

The Library conducted  an environmental scan of similar programs at Canadian and international post-secondary institutions to identify gaps in our collection, as well as reviewed all newly proposed courses and the full SEE Program proposal.

All funds are in Canadian dollars, and are identified as one-time purchase costs or ongoing (subscribed) costs. All prices presented are estimates or quotes, converted to CAD from USD at 1.32 where appropriate.

Electronic Resources

IEEE/IEE Electronic Library (IEEE Xplore), Web of Science, Applied Science and Technology Index, and a variety of other multidisciplinary resources all provided by current library licenses, will partially support these programs.

Other Engineering e-Resources may be required:

Compendex (comprehensive engineering index): $43,560/year
The COMPENDEX database, produced by Engineering Information, Inc., covers the core literature of the engineering field, including related specialties and technologies. Citations (including abstracts) are drawn from approximately 5000 journals and key conference proceedings.

Knovel - selected subject collections (suggestions only, final collections to be determined in consultation wtih faculty):
     - Civil engineering & construction materials: $2,488
     - Electrical & power engineering: $1,571
     - Environment & environmental engineering: $983
     - General engineering & project administration: $3,175

While the numbers above appear robust, many of them are ebooks in publisher packages that do not have guaranteed, ongoing funding.  The following ebook package should be permanently funded to support this program:

Springer Energy Package: $12,398/year list price
Springer Engineering Package: $20,000/year

~The full Engineering Package cost $53,834 (list price) in 2016.   The Library is assessing the Systems Engineering Program for a portion of the total package as it's anticipated that costs will be shared between existing allocations.

Prices above represent 2016 pricing.  Prices for these packages vary annually, and annual increases can be expected.

Total ongoing ebook costs: $32,398/year + annual increases

Ongoing funds will also be required to ensure that our collection can grow and develop with the program. While some of this can be supported by current collection development activities for SFU Surrey Mechatronics and SFU Engineering, specialized titles to support the new programs will need to be added to our profiles with book vendors.

Estimated costs:  ~75 books/year at an average book price of $225 = $16,875/year.

As this is a new program to SFU, a core monograph collection to support it will need to be established at the Surrey campus. 50 books x average book price of $250= $12,500

Total one-time cost to build core collection: $12,500

Total monograph costs:
one-time: $12,500
ongoing: $49,273

Total costs:
one-time: $12,500
ongoing: $148,519

(alternate ongoing costs without Compendex: $104,959)
