This is the Library's assessment for the proposed new courses Math 408 and 448. Both of these courses are to be offered at the SFU Surrey campus. The assessment addresses the ability of the Surrey campus library to support students in these courses.
These courses are part of the new Operations Research option of the Industrial Mathematics Program. The library previously conducted an assessment for the Centre for Operations Research and Decision Sciences. This assessment established funds to create a core collection in Operations Research as well as $3,600/year ongoing money to support collection development that will support these courses.
Although there has been an increase in collections activity in areas at the Surrey Library, it is still in development. Additional collection development will need to be undertaken, as detailed below.
Math 408 Discrete Optimization
This course will be offered annually at the Surrey campus with an expected enrollment of 25-30 students.
The existing SFU Library book collection was assessed using Library of Congress subject headings for the topics covered for these courses. Related subject headings and our holdings are listed below. The first number indicates holdings at Surrey and the number in parentheses represents holdings at Bennett.
integer programming 1 (27)
mathematical optimization 24 (552)
operations research 11 (339)
programming (mathematics) 7 (151)
relaxation methods (mathematics) 0 (11)
Ongoing cost: 5 x average book price $120 = $600
Existing collections of serials and bibliographic tools at the SFU Library are adequate to support this offering at Surrey.
Math 448: Network Flows
This course will be offered at the Surrey campus beginning in Spring 2006 and biannually thereafter, with an expected enrollment of 25-30.
The existing SFU Library book collection was assessed using Library of Congress subject headings for the topics covered for these courses. Related subject headings and our holdings are listed below. The first number indicates holdings at Surrey and the number in parentheses represents holdings at Bennett.
linear programming 14 (204)
mathematical optimization 24 (552)
network analysis planning 2 (68)
operations research 11 (339)
While a core collection that will support this course is currently being developed, the Surrey Library will need to purchase a small number of new imprints each year to keep this collection current.
Ongoing cost: 5 x average book price $120 = $600
Existing collections of serials and bibliographic tools at the SFU Library are adequate to support this offering at Surrey.
Total costs
Ongoing: $1200
The Library will request funding from allocations designated for the Surrey campus. There are no costs to the Department of Mathematics.
