Library Course Assessment for Math 150, 348

This is the Library's assessment for the proposed new courses Math 150 and 348. Both of these courses are to be offered at the SFU Surrey campus. The assessment addresses the ability of the Surrey campus library to support students in these courses.

Although there is some very limited collecting of mathematics materials at the Surrey Library, the resources there are inadequate to support expanded mathematics programming. Additional collection development will need to be undertaken, as detailed below.

Math 150 Calculus I

This course will be offered annually at the Surrey campus with an expected enrollment of 200 students. The Surrey Library currently only includes 17 related books, including the course text (supporting Fall 2005 offering by special permission). Library experience dictates that the main draw on the Library from this course will be some students seeking some basic background sources in calculus. The core collection of introductory calculus titles should be expanded.

One-time cost: 15 x average book price $110 = $1650

The Surrey Library will also need to purchase a small number of new imprints each year to keep this collection current.

Ongoing cost: 5 x average book price $110 = $550

Existing collections of serials and bibliographic tools at the SFU Library are adequate to support this offering at Surrey.

Math 150 may also replace one of the fall offerings of Math 151 at the Burnaby campus. No additional resources are required for the Burnaby offerings.

Math 348 Probabilistic Models in Operations Research

This course will be offered at the Surrey campus beginning in Fall 2006 and annually thereafter, with an expected enrollment of 25-30.

The Surrey Library will need to establish a collection of related books.

Total costs

One-time: $3300

Ongoing: $1100

The Library will request funding from allocations designated for the Surrey campus.  There are no costs to the Department of Mathematics.
