Math 130

This is the Library’s assessment for Math 130 Geometry for Computer Graphics. This course will be offered at the Surrey campus. It will be first offered in 2004-3 and every fall and spring semester thereafter with an expected enrollment of 80 students.

Library Resources
The Surrey Library collection includes the three reference texts listed on the course outline. However, for an anticipated enrollment of 80 students, an additional copy of each will be required.

Computer graphics: mathematical first steps / Egerton & Hall. Prentice-Hall, 1998. 0-13-599572-8 $77

The Geometry toolbox for graphics and modeling / Farin & Hansford. AK Peters, 1998. 1-56881-074-1 $65

Mathematical elements for computer graphics / Rogers and Adams. McGraw-Hill, 1990. 0070535302. $113

The SFU Library's book collection was assessed using Library of Congress subject headings for the topics covered by this course. Related subject headings and SFU holdings are listed below. Surrey holdings are listed first; overall SFU holdings are listed in brackets.

Computer-aided design 16 [255]
Computer graphics 120 [730]
Computer science – mathematics 11 [100]
Curves, plane 0 [8]
Geometry 14 [195]
Matrices 0 [231]
Three-dimensional display systems 26 [88]
Vector analysis 0 [121]

As an introductory Math course, the primary collection required by students in this course will be the monograph collection. The Surrey collection does not include adequate depth on these subjects. Beginning in 2004, the Surrey Library should add the subject heading "6048 Geometry division" to its Blackwell's forms profile and make a selection of appropriate new books on this topic for addition to the collection. Cost: 10 x $75 (average book price) = $750/year

One-time cost: $255
Ongoing cost: $750/year

The Library expects to receive funding from the Surrey budget to cover these costs.

Math 254

This is the Library’s assessment for Math 254 Vector and Complex Analysis for Applied Sciences. This course will first be offered in 2005-01 and twice a year thereafter with an expected enrollment of 100 students. This course duplicates content that is now covered in Math 252, but Math 254 will be tailored for the needs of Applied Science students.

Library Resources
The SFU Library's book collection was assessed using Library of Congress subject headings for the topics covered by this course. Related subject headings and SFU holdings are listed below.

Calculus 326
Conformal mapping 23
Differential forms 27
Engineering mathematics 95
Exponential functions 7
Functions of complex variables 203
Harmonic functions 42
Mathematical analysis 372
Mathematical physics 594
Potential theory (mathematics) 74
Vector analysis 121
Vector fields 13

The Library is actively collecting in these areas. Monographs will be the primary collection required by students in this course.

The Library is adequately supporting Math 252. There are no additional library requirements for this course.

Costs:  There are no new library costs associated with this course.

Note:  The materials required for this course are located in the WAC Bennett Library on the Burnaby campus.  This assessment is based on the assumption that the course will be offered at SFU’s Burnaby campus.  If the course were to be offered at SFU Surrey or Harbour Center, or as an off-campus course, additional Library costs would be incurred.
