Introduction

This is the Library's assessment for the proposed restructuring of the graduate program in Mathematics. New courses are listed separately below.

Math 817 Groups and Rings

This course will first be offered in 2005-3 and every two years thereafter with an expected enrollment of 20 students. SFU Library monograph holdings were analyzed using Library of Congress Subject Headings. SFU holdings are listed below, and include only the books on the main headings, not the sub-headings associated with these.

Algebra 253
Algebra, abstract 113
Finite groups 97
Group theory 286
Group rings 20
Representation of groups 202

The course textbook is in the Library collection. The Library is collecting actively in this area; monograph holdings are adequate to support this course.

Math 818 Algebraic Geometry

This course will first be offered in 2006-3 and every 2 years thereafter, with an expected enrollment of 20 students. SFU Library monograph holdings were analyzed using Library of Congress Subject Headings. SFU holdings are listed below, and include only the books on the main headings, not the sub-headings associated with these.

Commutative algebra 35
Curves, algebraic 58
Curves, Eliptic 23
Embeddings (Mathematics) 8
Geometry, algebraic 173
Morphisms (Mathematics) 3
Projective spaces 3
Riemann-Roch theorems 2

Both course textbooks are in the Library collection. The Library is actively collecting in this area. Although holdings are not extensive on some of these subject headings, this reflects a small publishing output on these specialized topics, rather than selective collecting on the part of the SFU Library. Holdings on the main heading "Algebraic Geometry" include many recent imprints, and will provide adequate coverage for a graduate class of 20 students.

Math 842 Algebraic Number Theory

This course will first be offered in 2006-1 and every 2 years thereafter with an expected enrollment of 20 students. SFU Library monograph holdings were analyzed using Library of Congress Subject Headings. SFU holdings are listed below, and include only the books on the main headings, not the sub-headings associated with these.

Algebra, abstract 113
Algebraic fields 96
Algebraic number theory 52
Class groups (mathematics) 3
Cyclotomy 9
Galois theory 55
Inverse Galois theory 3
Number theory 255
Valuation theory 13
Valued fields 3

Both course textbooks are in the Library collection. The Library is collecting actively in this subject area and has adequate monographs to support this course.

Math 843 Analytic and Diophantine Number Theory

This course will first be offered in 2005-1 and every two years thereafter with an expected enrollment of 20 students. SFU Library monograph holdings were analyzed using Library of Congress Subject Headings. SFU holdings are listed below, and include only the books on the main headings, not the sub-headings associated with these.

Diophantine analysis 26
Diophantine approximations 7
Diophantine equations 3
Dirichlet series 8
Exponential sums 6
Functions, zeta 35
L-functions 19
Number theory 255
Numbers, prime 31

The course textbook is in the Library collection. The Library is collecting actively in this subject area and has adequate monographs to support this course.

Serials

The Library provides access to the following journals that will support the research of students in these courses:

Algebra and logic
Algebra colloquim
Annals of mathematics
Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society
Communications in algebra
Communications on pure and applied mathematics
International journal of algebra and computation
Journal of algebra
Journal of algebraic combinatorics
Journal of number theory
Journal of pure and applied algebra
Journal of the American Mathematical Society
Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society
Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society
Quarterly journal of mathematics
SIAM journal on algebraic and discrete methods

In addition, many related articles can be found in a range of electronic journals in Mathematics available via the SFU Library.

However, t he Library currently lacks a subscription to the Journal of Algebraic Geometry, distributed by the American Mathematical Society (ISSN: 1056-3911). This journal is indexed in MathSciNet and Web of Science, ranked among the top 15 mathematics journals for impact factors (all sub-fields) in 2003, and is a very close match with the subject matter covered in MATH 818. With the agreement of the department, this subscription could be funded from the serials credit on file in the Library for Math.
Cost: $480/year

Bibliographic Tools

The following bibliographic tools, provided by Library license, will be useful for students in these courses, and will be adequate for finding appropriate literature:

MathSciNet
Web of Science

Other Courses

There are no additional library costs associated with these other courses in the proposal:

Math 701 Computer Algebra
Math 716 Numerical Analysis II
Math 718 Partial Differential Equations
Math 719 Linear Analysis
Math 724 Applications of Complex Analysis
Math 725 Real Analysis
Math 738 Linear Algebra
Math 739 Algebraic Systems
Math 740 Galois Theory
Math 743 Combinatorial Theory
Math 745 Graph Theory
Math 747 Coding Theory
Math 761 Mechanics of Deformable Media
Math 762 Fluid Dynamics
Math 767 Dynamical Systems
All of the above 700-level Math courses will be cross-listed with the existing, corresponding 400-level Math or MACM courses. Existing Library support for these courses is sufficient to support the addition of up to 5 graduate students in each course as outlined in the program proposal.

Math 819 Algebra: Selected Topics ( formerly offered as Math 814 Algebra: Selected Topics)
Math 845 Selected Topics in Number Theory
Math 878 PhD Comprehensive
Math 879 PhD Thesis Proposal
Math 880 MSc Project
Math 882 MSc Final Examination

Costs: There are no new library costs associated with these program changes.

A subscription to Journal of Algebraic Geometry is recommended. This can be funded from the Library serials credit for Mathematics.

Note:  The materials required for thes courses are located in the WAC Bennett Library on the Burnaby campus.  This assessment is based on the assumption that the courses will be offered at SFU’s Burnaby campus.  If the courses were to be offered at SFU Surrey or Harbour Centre, or as off-campus courses, additional Library costs would be incurred.
