Library Course Assessment for
MA for Teachers of English (MATE)
Surrey Campus
July 17, 2006
Introduction | 810 Studies in Theory I | Shakespeare Course | 20th Century Literature Course
Additional Resources | Total Cost
This is the Library report for the proposed calendar changes for the English Department's MA program. Currently, the Department's MA is offered at the Burnaby Campus. The MA for Teachers of English (MATE) is not proposing to offer any unique / new courses, but will be offered on the Surrey Campus to a cohort of 12-15 students. The MATE program is intended to provide opportunities for current English teachers in the secondary, elementary, and college systems to earn advanced degrees. The requirements for graduation from the MATE program will be the same as for the regular MA program. The main differences are the campus at which the programs are offered and in the delivery model.
English 810 (Studies in Theory I) will be slightly modified to be an introductory course for the cohort. They will take this course together as a cohort, as well as existing graduate courses in Shakespeare and 20th century literature. The remainder of their program will be comprised of courses from a variety of areas. The options are limited only by existing department graduate courses.
The SFU Library currently subscribes to various online resources that will support this program. Notable databases include the MLA International Bibliography, Contemporary Literary Criticism, and the World Shakespeare Bibliography. The Library also has many online journal subscriptions, including all major titles necessary to support graduate level research. All of these online resources are available on the Surrey Campus. Delivery of materials between the Burnaby Campus and Surrey Campus is also a well-established means of distributing resources. However, this program will still require books to be onsite and available to both students and the two new faculty members based at the Surrey campus. Currently there are no graduate-level resources in English at the Surrey Campus. As a result, this program will have significant start up costs, as well as ongoing costs in order to continue building the collection.
Our assessment is as follows:
810 Studies in Theory I
"Provides a detailed and contextual overview of critical debates in twentiety-century literary and cultural theory. The critical lineage explored will vary according to theoretical focus"
