Introduction

This new concentration is to be offered at the Surrey campus. The six new courses comprising this concentration are:
Kin 313 (4 credits) Nutrition and the Life Cycle: to be offered twice per year with approx. 54 students
Kin 314 (4 credits) Nutrition and Chronic Disease: to be offered twice per year with approx. 54 students
Kin 344 (4 credits) Exercise Prescription: to be offered twice per year
Kin 405 (4 credits) Clinical Exercise Physiology I: to be offered twice per year with approx. 50 students
Kin 406 (4 credits) Clinical Exercise Physiology II: to be offered twice per year with approx. 50 students
Kin 417 (4 credits) Obesity, Adipocyte Function & Weight Management: to be offered twice per year with approx. 36 students

Given the size of the classes, the frequency with which they will be offered, and location in Surrey, which has not collected heavily in Kinesiology, ongoing acquisitions will be necessary to support this program.

Medical physiology
Diet therapy
Human nutrition
Human metabolism
Human skeleton
Human muscle
Human nervous system
Diseases of nerves
Immunology
Human tissue

These subject headings should yield 50 books per year (approximately 10 per course, excluding the gym-based course) which will facilitate student assignments.

50 titles x $100 each = $5,000 per year

Serials

Most necessary journals for this program are already held as electronic journals and can be accessed from the Surrey campus. However, one title which seems relevant to proposed courses Kin 405, Kin 406, and Kin 417 is:

Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly
This journal describes itself as "an international, multidisciplinary journal, designed to stimulate and communicate high scholarly inquiry related to physical activity for special needs populations."
Cost: $375 per year Cdn ($317.20 US x 1.18)

Costs

Total costs of library resources to support this program are:
One-time costs: $712 + 837 = $1,549
Ongoing costs: $5,000 + $375 = $5,375

These costs will be funded through the Surrey Campus Director's funding to the Surrey Library. Funding for this request has been confirmed.
