Introduction:

This is the library's course assessment for the following courses:

HSCI 321: Human Pathophysiology
HSCI 329: Exploitation and Vulnerable Populations
HSCI 438: Animal Virology
HSCI 439: Pathogenesis of Human and Animal Viral Infectious Diseases
HSCI 440: Cellular Pathophysiology Laboratory
HSCI 474/774: Seminar in Neuropharmacology
HSCI 475/775: Seminar in Molecular Mechanisms of Epigenetics
HSCI 476/776: Seminar in Molecular Basis of Drug Action and Environmental Exposure
HSCI 477/777: Seminar in Vaccine Immunology
HSCI 478/778: Seminar in Molecular Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases

These courses will first be offered in Fall 2009 or Spring 2010 at the Burnaby campus.

HSCI 321: Human Pathophysiology

This course requires no additional resources.

HSCI 329: Exploitation and Vulnerable Populations

This course is to be taught every second year as an elective to approximately 25 students.

The library's journal and database holdings are adequate to support this course.

Monograph holdings are scarce in this course's core topics. Current library holdings on course topics are:

Clinical trials--Moral and ethical aspects--Developing countries 1
Sale of organs, tissues, etc. 2
Human reproductive technology--Moral and ethical aspects 47
Human reproduction--Moral and ethical aspects 21
keywords: bioethics + vulnerab* 9
keywords: bioethics + exploitation 1

These holdings are not sufficient to allow students to complete assignments. It is recommended that the library increase purchases on these topics.

Total costs for this course:
4 x $75 = $300 per year

HSCI 438: Animal Virology

This course requires no further resources.

HSCI 439: Pathogenesis of Human and Animal Viral Infectious Diseases

This course will be offered once a year as an elective to 10-20 students.

The library currently purchases very few monographs on this topic. This should be increased by 5 titles per year.

Databases are adequate.

Journal holdings are adequate.

Totals:
5 x $140 = $700 / year (monographs)

HSCI 440: Cellular Pathophysiology Laboratory

This course requires no additional resources.

HSCI 474/774: Seminar in Neuropharmacology

This course will be offered once a year as an elective to about 30 students.

The course recommended text is not currently held and needs to be purchased:
Psychopharmacology : drugs, the brain, and behaviour / Jerrold S. Meyer, Linda F. Quenzer. Sinauer Associates, 2004
ISBN: 0878935347, 9780878935345
USD82.95 (97.88 CDN)

Monographic holdings are adequate.

Database holdings are adequate.

Journal holdings are adequate.

Total costs for this course:
One-time monographic purchases will be covered by existing funds.

HSCI 475/775: Seminar in Molecular Mechanisms of Epigenetics

This course will be offered once a year as an elective to about 18 students.

Database holdings are adequate.

Monograph purchases in this emerging field should be increased considerably.

Because of the newness of this field, few dedicated journals have previously formed part of the library's holdings. It is recommended that the library subscribe to the following journals to support research, particularly as this course will sometimes be offered at the graduate level:
Epigenetics -- $1,188
Gene Expression -- $903
Critical Reviews in Eukaryotic Gene Expression -- $901

Total costs for this course:
10 x $140 = $1,400 / year (monographs)
$2,992 / year (journals)

HSCI 476/776: Seminar in Molecular Basis of Drug Action and Environmental Exposure

This course will be offered once a year as an elective to 10-20 students.

Database holdings are adequate.

The library already purchases some titles from the relevant Library of Congress subject headings (Genetic toxicology and Environmental Toxicology) but should increase its purchases to cover these topics more thoroughly.

Journal holdings are adequate.

Total for this course:
5 x $140 = $700 / year (monographs)

HSCI 477/777: Seminar in Vaccine Immunology

This course will be offered once a year as an elective to about 30 students.

The following course required or recommended texts are not currently held and need to be purchased:

Vaccines / [edited by] Stanley A. Plotkin, Walter A. Orenstein ; with assistance of Paul A. Offit.
2008 (5th edition) ISBN-13: 978-1416036111

USD76.95 (90.80 CDN)
eBook edition available USD110.93 (130.89 CDN)

Otherwise monographic holdings are adequate.

Databases are adequate.

Journal holdings are adequate.

Total costs for this course:
One-time monographic purchases will be covered by existing funds.

HSCI 478/778: Seminar in Molecular Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases

This course will be offered once a year as an elective to about 35 students.

Monographic holdings are adequate.

Databases are adequate.

It is recommended the library subscribe to the following journal to support this course:
Journal of Infectious Diseases -- $1,342

Total costs for this course:
$1,342 / year (journals)

Total:
Monographs $3,100 / year
Journals $4,334 / year
