Library Course Assessment for FAL 099 Foundations of Academic Literacy

This is the Library's report on the proposed course FAL 099 Foundations of Academic Literacy. This course is proposed by the Faculty of Education, but will be taken by students from throughout the University whose incoming Grade 12 English marks and/or LPI scores indicate they are not prepared to succeed in university writing courses. Estimated enrolment is 600 students per year. The course will be offered on the Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver campuses.

This report covers the Library's collection requirements to support this course. A separate memo from Lynn Copeland (October 27, 2005) will outline the space, equipment and staffing requirements to realize the role envisioned for the Library in this course.

The reading list provided with the course proposal included resources that will be useful for course designers and instructors, on the theory of academic literacy. With only a few exceptions, these titles are already included in the collection. Copies of the missing titles will be acquired. The journal collection supporting Education will be adequate to support the serials needs of course designers and instructors.

Monographs

Although the course proposal states that students will work primarily from custom courseware, there will also be a need to provide suitable material in the library collection to support the work of students enrolled in the course. This material is currently out of scope for collecting at the SFU Library, and will need to be added to the Library's collection development activities with an appropriate allocation in the budget.

In total, a core collection of 100 titles should be acquired for the Burnaby campus, and 20 each Vancouver and Surrey campuses.

To maintain the currency of this collection, another 30 books per year should be acquired for Burnaby, and 10 each for Vancouver and Surrey.

At an average book price of $65 this yields the following totals:

One-time: $9,100

Ongoing: $3,250/year

Online tutorial

There will also be a need to supply interactive support materials for students in the course.

During 2005 the Library trialed one such product, the Online Reader--Self-Paced from EBSCO, an interdisciplinary database of expository reading content designed to build students’ reading comprehension skills across content areas. Students or instructors can choose from high interest, nonfiction magazine articles and progress through them at their own pace according to individual reading needs. Readability indicators are available for each article to facilitate selection. Each Online Reader article has a reading comprehension test that is automatically graded and question types are similar to those found on standardized tests.

Annual cost: $1,440/year

Total cost:

One-time:$9,100

Ongoing: $4,690
