Panelists:
Jon Driver
Jon Driver has been a faculty member in Archaeology since 1982. He has served as Chair of Archaeology (1993-1996), Dean of Graduate Studies (2000-2008) and Vice-President Academic and Provost (2008-2016).
He has undertaken archaeological fieldwork and laboratory analysis in England, the American Southwest and western Canada. His research deals generally with human subsistence and human/environment relationships, topics that he approaches through the study of animal remains from archaeological sites. He is currently working on the environmental and cultural history of the Peace River region in BC and Alberta, with emphasis on the site of Tse’K’wa (also known as Charlie Lake Cave) http://summit.sfu.ca/item/15869 . He is still publishing on archaeology of the American Southwest.
He is currently a research associate of Crow Canyon Archaeological Center (Colorado) and president of the Western Canadian Universities Marine Sciences Society that operates the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (Vancouver Island) http://www.bamfieldmsc.com/on behalf of the Universities of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Victoria and SFU.
Anne-Marie Nicol
Anne-Marie Nicol is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Co-PI of the CAREX Canada Project based at SFU (www.carexcanada.ca). The CAREX platform uses from a wide range of data sources to provides estimates of Canadian's exposures to carcinogenic substances at work and at home. Anne-Marie's research areas include public and environmental health with a current focus on radon gas exposure and the challenges of obtaining, managing and visualizing data for this important cancer-causing agent. Anne-Marie holds a PhD from UBC in Health Care and Epidemiology and a degree in Communications from SFU.
Bryan Kinney
Bryan Kinney is an Associate Professor in Criminology and Assistant Director of the Institute for Canadian Urban Research Studies (ICURS). Bryan’s ‘big data’ interest concern development and interoperability of criminal justice (police, courts, corrections, etc.) and public safety (health and victim services, etc.) databases. Functionally, big data—for criminologist and the wider public safety sector—means that we can do more with the data we do have. Big data allows us to answer more specific questions than before.

Introduction to the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Pillars
The three federal research funding agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) (the agencies)—have developed a draft Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy, which aims to support Canadian research excellence by fostering sound digital data management and data stewardship practices.
The draft policy includes suggested requirements related to three primary areas:
- Institutional data management strategies
- Researcher data management plans
- Data deposit
Jeff Moon, Director, Portage Network, will introduce these data management pillars and address their implications for researcher data curation.
Jeff Moon is the Director of Portage, a national, library-based network launched by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) with the goal of building capacity and coordinating Research Data Management (RDM) activities in Canada. Prior to his role with Portage, Jeff served as Data Librarian at Queen’s University Library, as Academic Director of the Queen’s Research Data Centre, and as manager of the Queen’s University RDM Service. Jeff also teaches a graduate-level RDM course at Western University.
