Introduction

This is the Library Report for the proposed Master of Engineering in Smart Manufacturing and Systems, to be offered at the SFU Surrey Campus. The anticipated program start date for this program is Fall 2021.

The proposal includes five new courses:

  • MSE 910: Industrial Internet of Things
  • MSE 923: Smart Factory I
  • MSE 924: Smart Factory II
  • MSE 980: Industry 4.0
  • MSE 981: Industrial Big Data Analytics

Three new faculty members will be hired to teach the above listed courses.

The initial target enrollment for the program is 24 students, and full capacity (in year 3) is estimated at 36~48 students as steady-state enrollment.

The Library has concerns regarding completing a firm assessment of required resources without faculty being in place for consultation, and without detailed course proposals. What follows is a general assessment based on the limited information available at this time, and assessed the program as a whole vs. by individual courses.

All funds are in Canadian dollars, and are identified as one-time purchase costs or ongoing (subscribed) costs. All prices presented are estimates or quotes, converted to CAD from USD at $1.37 where appropriate.

Electronic Resources

Knovel, IEEE/IEE Electronic Library (IEEE Xplore), Web of Science, Applied Science and Technology Index, and a variety of other multidisciplinary resources all provided by current library licenses, will partially support these programs.

Other Engineering e-Resources may be required:

Compendex (comprehensive engineering index): $20,297/year
The COMPENDEX database, produced by Engineering Information, Inc., covers the core literature of the engineering field, including related specialties and technologies. Citations (including abstracts) are drawn from approximately 5000 journals and key conference proceedings.

Knovel Manufacturing Engineering collection: $1,898/year

Total Ongoing funds for e-Resources: $22,195 + annual increases (minimum 3% annually)

Serials

The following are examples of journals that will support this program currently available from the SFU library:

          Cyber-physical systems
Expert Systems: the journal of knowledge engineering
          Flexible Services and Manufacturing Journal
          IEEE internet of things journal
          Internet of Things
Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering
          Journal of Manufacturing Systems
          Materials and Manufacturing Processes

As this is a new program to  SFU, new journal titles will be required to support the program and as well as newly hired faculty. What follows are suggestions only -- actual title lists will be complied in consultation with faculty.

International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems $1,329
Journal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems, and Manufacturing awaiting pricing
          Nature Machine Intelligence $8,630
Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing Systems awaiting pricing

Anticipated ongoing cost for serials: $15,000/year

Monographs

The SFU library is currently collecting monographs in a wide range of LC subjects that support this program:

LC Subject Headings SFU Holdings
Internet of Things 369
Smart Manufacturing 4
Computer integrated manufacturing systems 270
Manufacturing industries -- Technological innovations 51

This is a small sampling.  While the numbers above appear robust, many of them are ebooks in publisher packages that do not have guaranteed, ongoing funding.  Funding is needed to ensure continued access to publisher packages and to ensure that we are collecting titles that support new faculty and graduate student needs.

Ongoing funds will also be required to ensure that our collection can grow and develop with the program. While some of this can be supported by current collection development activities for SFU Surrey Mechatronics and SFU Engineering, specialized titles to support the new programs will need to be added to our profiles with our book vendor.

For example, continued funding for our Springer Engineering ebook package is not guaranteed.  This package will cost $25,116 for 2021.

Estimated ebook costs: $5,000/year
