This is the Library Assessment of the new Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) and PhD programs in Sustainable Energy Engineering (SEE).
At capacity, the two new graduate programs in the SEE program will see a total enrollment of 120 students. The undergraduate assessment was based on an enrollment of 320. An additional 120 students, combined with different needs of graduate researchers, means that the library will require additional resources to serve the students in these programs. Graduate programs involve greater depth in collection development to serve the more intense needs of graduate students.
What is required is an expansion of the original undergraduate assessment. Much of that assessment the proposed graduate programs in general, particularly the acquisition of the Springer Energy Package, Nature Energy, and Knovel.
The additional 120 graduate students brings a 37% increase to the overall SEE enrollment forecasted in the original assessment. The assessment below uses this percentage to calculate necessary additional costs.
There are three newly proposed courses for the MASc:
SEE 820: Materials Design for Energy Systems
SEE 821: Membranes and Filtration
SEE 850: Energy Storage Systems
All three courses will first be offered in the Fall of 2019 and annually thereafter with an estimated enrollment of 20 students.
All resources listed on the course outlines are held by the SFU library and related holdings are strong. All prerequisites for these courses (SEE 222, 224, 225, 230) were included in the Library report for the undergraduate program.
Electronic Resources
The original assessment provides enough resources to support the addition of graduate programs.
No additional Electronic Resources Required.
Serials
The original report assessed $20,000 per year to support undergraduate programs and new faculty.
As new graduate students will increase the research needs in areas already new to our collection development thus far, it is recommended we increase serials funds for the program to $27,400.
Total new serials costs: $7,400/year
Monographs
The addition of graduate programs to SEE reinforces the need to ensure the library is able to acquire both the Springer Energy Package and the Springer Engineering Package. The original assessment asked for the full cost of the Springer Energy Package ($12,398/year) and for a portion of the Springer Engineering package ($20,000/year out of a total cost of $54,000). The costs for this package are shared between existing allocations. With the increase in enrollment these graduate programs will bring, the SEE portion of the cost should increase to $27,400/year.
Prices above represent 2016 pricing. Prices for these packages vary annually, and annual increases can be expected.
Total new ongoing ebook package costs: $7,400/year + annual increases.
Additional ongoing funds will also be required to ensure that our collection can grow and develop in ways that support these new graduate programs.
The previous report assessed for ~75 books/year at an average book price of $225 = $16,875/year.
The additional 120 graduate students represents a 37% increase in students, and ongoing monograph must be expanded to adequately support the programs.
Total new ongoing monograph costs: $6,250/year
Total new monographs cost:
ongoing: $13,650/year
TOTAL costs:
ongoing: $21,050/year
