Library Course Assessment for the
SFU NOW (Nights or Weekends) Proposal

Introduction

This is the Library’s assessment of collection needs to support the proposed SFU NOW (Nights or Weekends) Program. The program's intended market is adults with three to five years working experience who are interested in taking university-level courses. Students may either earn a degree (starting at first year), complete a degree previously started, or simply take courses they are interested in. The program will primarily be offered at the SFU Surrey and Vancouver Campuses as these campuses are more easily accessible to adult student populations.

The SFU NOW program will begin with a set of first-year courses in order to enable the university to establish the program gradually. The initial set of SFU NOW offerings might also include a small number of upper division courses without prerequisites to accommodate those who already have some university credits/experience.

In addition to the funding necessary to support additional library service hours and librarian support, funds will be required to ensure that there are adequate materials at all campuses to support courses that may not have been offered there previously. This assessment provides an estimate of those costs. The additional costs for service hours and instructional support will be documented separately.

Bibliographic Tools

As the courses proposed for the SFU NOW program are all current undergraduate offerings at various campuses, the Library has many subscriptions to numerous databases that will support these students. No additional bibliographic tools are required.

Journals

The SFU Library subscribes to numerous journals that will support this program. The vast majority of them are available online and therefore available at all three campuses as well as remotely. No additional journal subscriptions are necessary to support this program.

Monographs

The W.A.C. Bennett Library is currently actively collecting in all of subject areas proposed for this program. As these courses will be taught at the SFU Vancouver and SFU Surrey campuses, their respective libraries will need to add additional subject areas to their existing collection activities in order to support the NOW students. What follows is a course by course analysis of holdings in the relevant subject headings for each course proposed to be part of the NOW program. This illustrates the areas that will require increased monograph support.

The table below indicates which courses will require additional ongoing resources to support them and on which campuses these resources are required. "" indicates that current collection development activities are sufficient and that no ongoing resources will be required to support those courses on their respective campus. An "X" indicates that current collection development activities are not adequate to support the course on a specific campus. These courses will require an average of 10 books/year at an average cost of $70/book = $700/year.
