This is the Library's assessment of HS 304 Alexander the Great and the Quest for World Empire. This elective course will first be offered in the fall of 2015 and annually thereafter with an estimated enrollment of 50 students.
Relevant Subject headings related to this course and the SFU library's holdings are as follows:
Alexander, the Great, 356 B.C.-323 B.C -- 79(107)
Hellenism -- 28(87)
This course proposal also exposes a gap in our collection development activities. Collection Development in History currently includes activity in Medieval Greece/Byzantine Empire and Modern Greece, but not Ancient Greece. What we do have on Ancient Greece is focused on archaeology, not History, or is quite dated. If this course is approved, Collection Development activities will need to be expanded to cover this area of study.
This means that the SFU Library will have to add relevant subject headings to our profile with our major book wholesaler. There is also a need to establish a core monograph collection including reference texts as well as supporting materials. This collection will need to be maintained over time.
Twenty titles will need to be purchased to form a core collection ( including reference texts ).
20 books x average book cost of $140 = $2,800
The following subject headings will need to be added to the History/Hellenic Studies profile:
15 books/year at an average book cost of $140 = $2,100
The library currently provides access to journals that will prove useful for this course. Here is a sample:
Greece & Rome
Greek, Roman & Byzantine Studies
History of Political Thought
Mnemosyne
Scholia
Tekmria
No additional journal subscriptions are required.
The library subscribes to a variety of bibliographic tools that will support this course, including American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Historical Periodicals Collection, JSTOR, Project MUSE.
No additional bibliographic tools are required.
One-time costs: $2,800
Ongoing costs: $2,100/year
