About the event
Comprehensive Exams (variously known as Qualifying exams—or “quals”—and Candidacy Examinations) are a common part of Doctoral programs. Typically, passing such an examination is a key marker of progression in a degree program: once the exam is passed, a student officially becomes a “Doctoral Candidate.” The structure, timelines, expectations, and experiences of these exams varies widely across disciplines and departments: from 4-hour sit-down exams to 4-month research and writing semesters. This event brings together four graduate student panelists at SFU who have completed their comprehensive examinations:
- Emily Blyth, PhD Candidate in Health Sciences
- D.W. Kamish, PhD Candidate in Communication
- Erik Mohns, PhD Candidate in Health Sciences
- Shaila Shams, PhD Candidate in Education
These scholars will share their experiences with the comprehensive examination process. The event will provide time and space for SFU graduate students from across disciplines to share questions, concerns, insights, and experiences related to writing (and passing!) comprehensive examinations. The Research Commons team will share resources and services available at the Library to support graduate students with their comprehensive exam processes—as well as tips and strategies for a successful experience.
