Freedom to Read Week is an annual Canadian event that encourages us to think about and reaffirm our commitment to intellectual freedom -- a right guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

"Freedom to read can never be taken for granted. Even in Canada, a free country by world standards, books and magazines are banned at the border. Books are removed from the shelves in Canadian libraries, schools and bookstores every day." – freedomtoread.ca

During Freedom to Read Week, February 20 to 26, 2022, check out the displays at Bennett Library (SFU Burnaby) and Fraser Library (SFU Surrey) for books that have been challenged or banned, as well as explore some of the challenged Children's and YA books from the Library's Curriculum Collection. You can learn more about why some books are challenged through Freedom to Read and find suggestions on how to get involved all year long, whether you're an educator, student, or member of the community.
