Research process

  1. Define your topic.
  2. Look for background information
  3. Based on your preliminary research, formulate a research question.
  4. Brainstorm keywords for each concept in your topic to use for searching for information.
  5. Use  Library Catalogue to find books  and use "subject lists" of Journal Article Databases to find articles.
  6. Evaluate your resources.
  7. Note key authors and works that may lead you to further sources.

Search tips & techniques

  • Use "or" to combine same concept;   Use "and" to combine different concepts.  
  • When you have only one line search box, then put braces around your synonyms

         NOTE: Use capital letters for "OR" and "AND" when using Boolean Logic in SFU Catalogue Search 
          (____________ or __________) AND (__________ or ________)

  • Use an asterisk (*) the truncation symbol, for variation on endings of words

        Entrepreneur* --> to find: entrepreneur, entrepreneurs , entrepreneurship

  • Use "quotation marks" to search for an exact phrase
  • Alternate spellings: use American & Canadian spellings (labour or labor)
  • Use abbreviations and full words (TV or television)
  • Geographic concepts:  ( Vancouver or BC or British Columbia or Canada or North America)
  • Alternate terms: Subject headings or Descriptors or Thesauri words.  Use words from the database thesaurus (if available)  to increase relevancy.
  • Google
    • Use intitle: to find those words in the titles of results

      intitle:airport intitle:security “full body” (ethics OR rights)

    • Searching within a specific site (domain)

      Use site: to specify results from a particular web site (domain) such as governments or educational institutions:

      “Airport security” “full body scans” site:gov

Find journal articles

  • Business Source Complete A good place to start your search of for findins articles from business journals.  It also has information on companies, countries,  industries and markets. 
    • To find a particular article from a business journal
      • Enter in search box: Name of journal and (Use pull-down menu to limit: Field = SO-Publication name)
        Enter either author or title of article (Use pull-down menu to limit either to AU or TI)
    • To search for a topic, such as "motivating the milleninals"
      • trading or trades
        stocks or bonds or equity or equities
  • CBCA Full Text Business: Canadian focus: Trade journals, general business publications, academic journals, topical journals, and professional publications
  • Factiva: Over 35,000 sources (newspapers, newswires, industry publications, websites, company reports, and more) from 200 countries, in 26 languages. Includes the Wall Street Journal.
  • LexisNexis: Newspapers, journals, reports, cases, and patents from the early 1970s to the present in the areas of Business, Law, and News. Includes some directories and market reports.
  • Sustainable Organization Library:  Online collection of nearly 800 ebooks, reports and journal issues focused on sustainability, CSR, corporate governance, ethics, environmental policy and management.

Financial data sources

  • Real-time and historical information on bonds, equities, commodities, currencies and funds in international markets.
  • MINT Global  A database that covers 64,000 publicly-traded companies from around the world + 148 million private companies. The majority of the private companies included in this database are from outside North America where filing regulations are more demanding for private companies.  It also has information on industries.
  • Platform for a variety of datasets in the fields of finance, accounting, banking and economics.
