Anchored in Data Reality
Ahoy! Set sail on a voyage of discovery during the 2024 Data Fair brought to you by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). This year's theme is "Anchored in Data Reality." Chart a course through the vast seas of data. Through the various sessions, you will navigate the waves of statistical analysis, chart the currents of data visualization, and steer a course toward actionable insights.
All sessions are virtual, free, and open to the public but require registration. Below you'll find a sample of presentations available. For further information and to view the full program, check out the 2024 ICPSR Data Fair.

Data Sharing for Demographic Research (DSDR): 20 Years of Sharing Population Health Research Data and Resources
Participants will learn how to:
- Discover, access, and share research data on maternal and child health, the human lifecycle, and health disparities;
- Meet NIH data sharing requirements for NICHD-funded grants by depositing data with DSDR;
- Access resources to advance research and data sharing;
- Stay informed about new data and resources.

Invalid with Any Code
Running complex analyses has become easier with the ability to Google commands or even use ChatGPT for writing code. People now grab data from anywhere they can get it, run sophisticated analyses, and put out interesting findings in public and scientific press. Then you find out their work is based on a dataset that has 95% missing data and asked four questions total. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of working with data, and even better if you find something novel, but the findings are only as good as the underlying data. Increasingly, journals retract publications due to falsified or misleading data, analyses, or citations. This session emphasizes the importance of understanding the basics – who, what, when, where, and how – of data collection before celebrating any results, yours or others’, and demonstrates the value of ICPSR metadata in that regard.

COVID Data Roundup: Exploring COVID-Related Data from ICPSR's Archives
What COVID mitigation policies were most crucial to preventing job loss? What was the impact on school and daycare closures for young children? What impact did the pandemic have on neighborhoods that already had a high level of socioeconomic disadvantage? Scholars are using ICPSR data resources to address these research questions and many others. In this session, staff from several of ICPSR’s archives will give an overview of the key data resources that researchers interested in COVID will want to know about. From time-tested treasures to hidden gems, researchers exploring COVID’s impacts won’t want to miss this chance to learn about the wealth of data available at ICPSR!

Data Use in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
The abundance of AI tools and uses has not gone unnoticed in the world of research data! You might have heard a student or colleague wonder aloud, “Can I just have ChatGPT do a quick analysis of these data?.” (We know you weren't asking the question, because you are as much of a data geek as we are!) If so, this session is for you! We will cover some of the basics about AI and why issues about its use with research data are timely, introduce ICPSR and other archives’ current thinking, and provide some concrete examples as guidance.
