The SFU Library, in partnership with KEY, SFU’s Big Data Initiative, is pleased to announce Simon Fraser University’s partnership with The Carpentries. The Carpentries project comprises Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry, communities of instructors and lessons within the project who share a mission to teach foundational computational and data science skills to researchers.
Software Carpentry workshops, with an emphasis on program design, version control, data management, and task automation, with Git, R, Python, and the Unix shell have been offered through SFU Library’s Research Commons since 2015.
This partnership will enable SFU to grow the number of SWC Instructor Trainers at SFU across disciplines and build a network of researchers who are interested in engaging with best practices in research computing. Becoming a part of this network is valuable for students interested in developing career skills and for researchers in ensuring they are capitalizing on tools and techniques that will save them time and effort in managing, analyzing, and visualizing data.  Bruno Grande, a graduate peer in SFU Library's Research Commons and badged SWC Instructor commented:

Realizing the value of what Software Carpentry offers, I decided to join their legion of volunteer helpers and eventually became a badged instructor. I have since led several lessons on Bash, Python, R, and Git as part of two-day Software Carpentry workshops. Ultimately, I want to help train the next generation of digitally literate researchers because I believe these important skills will accelerate their work. It is thus wonderful news that Simon Fraser University is partnering with Software Carpentry. I only expect great things from this collaboration!
