COVID-19: Media and Maker Commons services
Limited by-appointment services for SFU Instructors only are available in the Media and Maker Commons.
All SFU Libraries are currently closed to in-person use due to the COVID-19 virus.

To support online instruction while the University remains under COVID restrictions, SFU instructors are welcome to book an appointment to make in-person use of the audiovisual (AV) studios and computers located in the Media and Maker Commons (W.A.C. Bennett Library (SFU Burnaby)).

How to book an appointment
Appointments are for a maximum of 2 hours including set up and take down.
Due to physical distancing requirements, only solo appointments are available. Please do not bring anyone else to your appointment, including any dependents. If you require accompaniment due to a need for disability accommodation, please contact the MMC, at email@example.com in advance to discuss.
You must complete the SFU COVID-19 Awareness and Safe Return to Work Training. This is a requirement of all SFU employees. After you complete the training, and prior to your arriving for your appointment, please send a copy of your certificate to the Makerspace Librarian at firstname.lastname@example.org
Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the desired appointment time.
Appointments are currently available:
- Tuesdays and Thursdays
- 10am - 12pm or 1:00pm - 3:00pm.
To request an appointment, email MMC staff at email@example.com with:
- the date and time you want
- the activity you want to do
- your SFU COVID-19 Awareness and Safe Return to Work Training Certificate.
Before your appointment
Before you come to campus, you must complete both safety and equipment training, as noted below.
Do not come to campus if you:
- have any symptoms related to COVID-19
- live with anyone who is diagnosed with COVID-19, or
- have traveled outside of the country within the last two weeks.
COVID-19 Awareness and Safe Return to Work Training
Before coming to campus, you must provide proof that you have completed the SFU COVID-19 Awareness and Safe Return to Work Training.
This is a requirement of all SFU employees.
Before you arrive for your appointment, send a copy of your certificate to the Makerspace Librarian at firstname.lastname@example.org
Required equipment training, requesting equipment, and what you need to bring
Before you visit, familiarize yourself with the studio you will be using and its equipment:
If you require specific equipment in the Video Studio such as a green screen, studio lights, or a chair while recording, email email@example.com in advance to coordinate.
What you need to bring
If you want to use the teleprompter in the Video Studio, you will need to bring a laptop with an HDMI port and a file of text you want to read.
You must bring your own USB storage device. Media files are large and cannot be shared by email. The MMC cannot provide USB storage devices, and there are no campus locations open to purchase them.
Bring your own headphones.
When you arrive: What to do on the day of your appointment
We recommend you bring a mobile phone with you to your appointment. If you have questions during your appointment or need help finding the MMC, you can call us for assistance at 778-782-7161. This will help us maintain physical distancing.
The MMC studios and equipment will be sanitized prior to your arrival.
Please come to the West Emergency Exit door of the Bennett Library. Follow the signs for “Contactless Pickup” to find the door. Someone from the MMC will meet you.
Upon entering the Library, you must wash or sanitize your hands before using the MMC.
Please ensure that you follow all occupancy and safety signs posted on campus and in the Library.
Please keep all of your belongings with you while you are in the MMC.
Even though the appointments are for 2 hours, you should plan to only have about 1.5 hours of recording time, to account for set up and take down.

If you need assistance with your video/audio project or have additional questions after your appointment time, please contact the MMC at firstname.lastname@example.org. We can provide help via email or through a Zoom meeting or other virtual appointment.
