Online access to a book

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I think I am supposed to have access to "The acceptance of party unity in parliamentary democracies" by David M. Willumsen online (at least according to our catalogue) but then I go through and the European University Institute asks for a library barcode and PIN.  I don't have a pin and can't find any online help!  Help would be appreciated.

Using the new Catalogue

Q. I do not like the "new" version of the online catalogue. I have tried to learn to like it and I think I have given it a fair try. I speak as someone who used to work in cataloguing at U of Guelph and McGill.

Guide to business archives

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Hi, I am a graduate student of SFU. I came across a research report in the MSCI research archive that is only available to its client. Here is an example. And I am writing to ask whether the library has these reports or can get access to this archive. Thank you.

A:  Library subscribes to many business databases that also include industry reports. The guide below is a good starting point for doing research on business topics:

Full Quest access

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Are we supposed to have full text access to Quest? The SFU web page says Volume 49 - present. I'm looking for an article in Volume 48, and the journal web page provides access to articles in Volume 48 and before, but only if you pay (even if signed on through the SFU link). Should I be able to get access to the article? Here is the citation: Boyer, E. L. (1996). From scholarship reconsidered to scholarship assessed. Quest, 48(2), 129-139.

Unable to link to EBSCO from the Library site

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: Hi, I'm the TM for a history course and there's a reading we need to access which is linked through the Library. Unfortunately, the link from the library to EBSCO seems to be broken. It just leads to a search page that returned nothing. Would you be able to have a look? Here is the link.

Thanks for your time!

Accessing Google Scholar through the Library site

Published by Dipa Barua

Q:  When I connect to Google Scholar from the "article databases" link on the library home page, it doesn't recognize me as SFU faculty, and thus denies me free access to journals to which the library has
access when I try to link to the articles listed. How can I prevent this? I don't see anyway to log on from the home page.

How to find course reserves in the Library Catalogue

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: The library site instructions advise me to go to the "Course Reserves" tab from which I should be able to find the library reserves for my course. Ideally, students should be able to do a search by instructor and course, but the only option available is to enter a particular title. There is no option to search by "SA302" or by "Dergousoff" (though I know this used to be available). Is there some place in the new Catalogue where I can check to see what I have placed on reserve?  I find the new Catalogue most exasperating to work with!

Accessing a resource

Published by Dipa Barua

Q: I am trying to access the following resource listed on the SFU library website: World Book Day: Children's Literature and/in Translation Charles Forsdick 2015. However, I get the message "Oops! It looks like you have attempted to view a page that has not been configured for access."

Then I am told to contact my library and to provide the host line: "Host translating.hypotheses.org." How can I access this resource?
