Workstations in research commons

Published by Dipa Barua

Q. I often go to the research commons to use the computers. I noticed that some people will leave their belongings at a computer and not come back for hours. On busy days, some people will not be able to use a computer, or Windows users will only have the option to use Mac computers and vice versa. Can a sign be put up discouraging this type of behavior? Thank you for your time.

A. Thank you very much for your feedback and your suggestion. We do recognize that, especially at this time of year, the workstations in the Research Commons are in demand, and we understand it is frustrating to sometimes see these workstations "saved" for an extended period of time.

For the most part, we think our users are respectful of the space and their fellow colleagues. When someone is not respecting the space, we encourage you to gently remind them, or, if you are not comfortable doing so, to let one of our staff know.

Thank you for suggesting additional signage. We will put up a prominent notice this week to encourage respectful use of our space and workstations at this busy time of year.
