Special Collections and Rare Books Collections Policy at SFU Library

The Special Collections and Rare Books Division at Simon Fraser University’s W.A.C. Bennett library has developed outstanding Special Collections in the first 35 years of its existence. We are fortunate to have two mature collections in the Contemporary Literature Collection and the William Wordsworth Collection.

In 2001 the unit agreed to undertake the development of three new collections: a reference collection, a collection on the history of the book and the history of the book in Canada, and a collection on the history of western Canada. This will allow us to support a broader range of academic disciplines and this in turn will bring in new collections to the thematic areas, new additions to existing collections, and new vitality to Special Collections and Rare Books. We expect that the use of the collection and the number of classes taught in the Yosef Wosk Seminar Room will increase.

1.  Contemporary Literature Collection

The Contemporary Literature Collection is a sharply focused, research-level collection of 20th-century avant-garde, experimental, formally innovative, and ‘underground’ writing in English – poetry mainly, much of it published in limited editions thus scarce and/or rare.

Post-WW II, postmodern writing predominates, especially that of the various American groups brought together in Donald Allen’s influential 1960 anthology The New American Poetry – the Beats, San Francisco Renaissance, New York School, and the Black Mountain poets led by Charles Olson. In addition the collection includes Canadian avant-gardists, such as the Tish and Coach House Press groups, plus a smaller number of British experimentalists.

While emphasizing mid- through late-century writing, the collection also includes various early-century modernist precursors (Pound, W.C. Williams, et al.) as well as numerous present-day descendants (e.g. the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets).

The 172 writers listed below have been identified for collection in depth.  CLC gathers as much published material as possible (ideally, all published material) by and about these writers, including both primary and secondary appearances, plus sound and video recordings; also to the extent that availability and library budget permit, the unpublished work of certain of the writers – i.e. manuscript and archival material.

Location in Special Collections and Rare Books:	The Contemporary Literature Collection is a discrete collection located in the Special Collections and Rare Books area of WAC Bennett Library. (CLC). Additional copies of some items can be found in the Bennett general collection.
Collection Development Responsibility:	Collection development is the responsibility of the CLC Liaison Librarian.  Liaison with the English Department is maintained through the CLC Committee, consisting of the liaison librarian and two faculty members appointed by the Department.  Present committee members are Tony Power, Roy Miki and Stephen Collis.   The liaison librarian also consults with other faculty members and library staff.

2.  William Wordsworth Collection

The Wordsworth collection is a sharply focused, research-level collection of the lifetime editions of the works of William Wordsworth. In addition to the lifetime editions it includes the post-1850 principal and popular editions published in the 19th century. An associated collection of late 18th- and 19th-century guides, tours and histories concerning the Lake District complements the collection.

Barring extreme cost or rarity the goals are to collect:

•  all the Wordsworth lifetime editions
•  the principal and popular post 1850 editions published in the 19th century
• the late 18th- and 19th-century guides, tours and histories of the Lake District

While recognizing the primary goal of completing the core collection, the English faculty have expressed a desire to broaden the collection. Adding selected lifetime editions of various 18th-century Wordsworth precursors or associates and 19th-century contemporaries and descendents will increase the relevance and usefulness of the collection.

Areas for future development:

Wordsworth's Romantic Associates

The lifetime editions of the works of Wordsworth's Romantic contemporaries are an obvious area for future development. In particular the works of authors with whom Wordsworth had some connection would complement the collection. Specific authors are Anna Letitia Barbauld, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Felicia Hemans, Mary Lamb, Charlotte Smith, Robert Southey and Francis Wrangham.
Folk poetry and ballad collections
The publication of Wordsworth and Coleridge's joint work under the title "Lyrical Ballads" suggests they were influenced by the vogue which ballads enjoyed during this time.  To help contextualize their literary contribution, the library should acquire some of these ballad collections.  In particular, the collections of David Herd, Thomas Percy, Joseph Ritson, Anne Bannerman and Walter Scott should be targeted.  Collections put together by less well-known figures are also of interest.

Women writers

Apart from works of Wordsworth's female associates mentioned above, the collection should be expanded to include other British women writers of the period. The lifetime editions of the following authors are of particular interest:

The school of sensibility

The work of Joanna Baillie was especially influential on Wordsworth. Baillie's "Introductory Discourse" from "Plays on the Passions" is often compared by critics to Wordsworth's "Preface" to the "Lyrical Ballads." Baillie, and Wordsworth in turn, were influenced by the Scottish school of sensibility, whose ideas are found in the work of Adam Smith and Henry MacKenzie, for example. The library should try to acquire the important lifetime editions of these authors.

Labouring poets

Recent criticism has argued that the "new poetry" of Wordsworth and other middle-class, mostly male "Romantics" not only influenced the work of individual ballad-writers and women writers, but to some extent appropriated the voices of social groups new to authorship. Of particular interest is the work of women and other individuals of the labouring classes. Selected lifetime editions of the following labouring-class or artisan poets should be collected: Stephen Duck, Robert Tatersal, Mary Collier, John Bancks, Mary Leapor, James Woodhouse, Ann Yearsley, Elizabeth Hands, Elizabeth Bentley, Janet Little (m. Richmond) and Ann Candler. It would also be of interest to follow the strain of labour poetry through to the early years of the Victorian period. Of specific interest are the works of the chartist poets Ernest (Charles) Jones, Thomas Cooper, and Ebenezer Jones as well as those of working class sympathizers such as Thomas Hood ("The Song of the Shirt" and the "Bridge of Sighs") and Arthur J. Munby, who married his servant Hannah Cullwick and wrote Faithful Servants.

Poetry collections

The poetry collections before and after Wordsworth's time provide an excellent means of accessing authors he was either influenced by or had an influence on.
Several of the above groups of writers would be represented in 18th- and 19th-century poetry/biography collections such as George Colman & Bonnell Thornton, Poems by Eminent Ladies (1755); Robert Dodsley, A Collection of Poems by Several Hands (1748-58); Scots Musical Museum, Anderson's Ballads (1808); Alexander Dyce, Specimens of British Poetesses (1825); Mary Ann Stodart, Female Writers (1842); George Bethune, The British Female Poets (1848); Fredric Rowton, The Female Poets of Great Britain (1848); Jane Williams, Literary Women of England (1861); Eric S. Robertson English Poetesses (1883); and Women Poets of the Victorian Era.

3.  Wosk-McDonald Aldine Collection

This collection includes over 100 volumes from the presses of Aldus Manutius, Andreas Toressano, Paulus Manutius and Aldo Manutius II, pre-eminent humanist publishers of 16th-century Venice and Rome. Also included are important reference sources, exhibition catalogues, scholarly monographs, booksellers and auction catalogues related to Aldine books and the typographic and bibliographic innovations of the Manutius family.

4.  W. Lyon Blease English Private Press Books

This collection consists of some 450 books and ephemera from the English private press movement concentrated between the two world wars. Included are important works from the Ashendene, Doves, Golden Cockerel, Gregynog and Nonesuch presses. There are also ephemera, reference works, bibliographies and histories related to the presses.

5. Alcuin Society Prize for Excellence in Book Design

This collection consists of the annual prize-winning books of the Alcuin Society Book Awards for Excellence in Book Design. These awards were first given in 1983. The collection begins with the 1988 year of the awards and is added to each year. By 2000 there were some 300 items in the collection.

6.  Thoreau MacDonald Illustrator

This collection consists of about 178 books and pamphlets illustrated by the Canadian book illustrator Thoreau MacDonald.

7.  Len Norris Cartoon Collection

This collection is the largest extant grouping, some 1660 cartoons, of the famous Vancouver Sun cartoonist Len Norris (1913 –1997).

8.  Doukhobor Collection

This collection gathers together manuscripts, documents, photographs, pamphlets and books on the Doukhobor people from Russia who immigrated to Canada in the latter part of the 19th century. About 230 books pamphlets and periodicals are present as well as about 150 manuscripts and photographs and 400 scanned images. Some of the material is in Russian.

13.  World War Two Propaganda Collection

This collection of about 300 items includes some very interesting propaganda material from various groups involved in World War Two. The largest grouping is from the French Vichy government, which collaborated with Nazi Germany.

There is also Nazi or Nazi-collaborationist propaganda against the Allies especially Great Britain, the Soviet Union and the United States of America, and such groups as Jews and Communists.

16. Reference Collection

The purpose of the reference collection is to assist the librarians, faculty and students to understand and use the material held in Special Collections and Rare Books. Included are bibliographies, encyclopedias, dictionaries, biographies and other materials that provide a context for and understanding of special collections and rare books held by the division.

17.  History of the Book and History of the Book in Canada Collection

This collection is a thematic collection that gathers together existing groupings within rare books and develops them into a more integrated whole. Existing elements include the: Aldine, English private press, Thoreau MacDonald, Alcuin, E. Pauline Johnson, Douglas and McIntyre, and Sono Nis collections which together are a beginning to a collection on the history of the book and the history of the book in Canada. The emphasis in the growth of this collection will be on the History of the Book in Canada component.

This collection will support a variety of academic interests including faculty in English, Communications, History, Contemporary Arts, and the Master of Publishing Program. The editorial work for the History of the Book in Canada project volume three, which will be done at SFU, is likely to produce spin-offs and this collection will both benefit and benefit from the H.B.C. project. The collection will complement existing collection strengths at SFU Library.

18.  History of Canada and History of Western Canada

This collection is a thematic collection that mainly includes elements related to the history of western Canada. Existing collections include the Doukhobor collection, the C.C.F. collection and the Len Norris and Roy Peterson collections. There are pending gifts of Hutterite and early Canadian socialist material. Also included will be material on Social Credit, labour, peace, feminist and other social movements. This collection will complement strong holdings of SFU Archives that include the papers of W.A.C. Bennett and strong feminist archival collections. This collection can grow mainly through gifts-in-kind at least in its initial growth phase.

This collection will support vigorous academic interests in Criminology, Sociology, Political Science, Women’s Studies, Labour Studies, Business and History.
