Off Campus Access Bookmarklet

Access SFU library ejournals, ebooks and databases through the SFU library's web site. Routing your computer's access through the library's site ensures that publisher web sites allow your computer access to material to which the library subscribes on your behalf. Links on the library's site are coded to prompt you for your username, if necessary.

If you access library resources through the library's site, you do not need to do anything other than enter your SFU computing ID (or SFU library barcode if you do not have a SFU computing ID) when prompted.

When to use the bookmarklet

Use this bookmarklet if you make use of web sites or services which are not accessed via the SFU library's web site but which contain links to material, such as electronic journal articles, available via the SFU library. If, in the course of trying to access such material, your off campus computer is denied access to content to which the library subscribes, click on this bookmarklet from within your web browser. Examples of such services include:

  • Emails from publishers, such as table of contents alerts, which contains links to content such as ejournal articles or ebooks. Links in such emails frequently bypass the library's site.
  • Search engines such as PubMed or Google which are freely available to anyone and can be accessed from an off campus computer without going through the SFU library's site.

This bookmarklet takes the URL for a journal article and routes it through the library's web site, proving to a publisher that your off campus computer has access rights to the content.

How to use the bookmarklet

After clicking on a link to an article or ebook and arriving at the web site for the item's publisher or provider, click on the bookmarklet from your favourites or bookmarks from your web browser. You will be prompted to enter your SFU Computing ID. As long as you keep the initial browser window open, you will not need to input your ID again.
You may, however, need to click on the bookmarklet from within your favourites in order to access subsequent articles.

In some cases you may need to use the browser's "Back" button to return to the article or resource URL, not the publisher's login/error page.
