Thesis Requirements: Title Page

90+% of theses have errors on the Title Pages and so we have streamlined how details need to be included on your Title Page.

Rather than look at previous theses, please be sure to include details for the page's 6 elements (Title, Your Previous Degrees, in partial fulfilment..., your department/faculty, copyright statement and semester, all rights reserved statement) as indicated below

If something is unclear to you, please contact .

Title Page Specifications

  • The Title Page spans one page—no page number on the page.
  • Pay particular attention to when punctuation is used—or not—throughout the Title Page.
  • Spacing between Elements.  Please make sure there is space between all the elements on the Title Page.  For example, after the Title and before and after the 'by Author...' element (see examples below); If you're working in the old template (it has the "para" style in it), press [Enter] (PC) or [Return] (Mac) so the space above the 'by' and below your current 'degrees' is about the same; If you're using the new template's title page layout, apply the correct style to the various elements (see template instructions) and use the [Shift] + [Enter] (PC) or [Shift] + [Return] (Mac) to end line within elements.  Also delete any empty paragraphs between elements.

1. TheTitle

  • No quotations marks around the title yet, if there is a need for quotation marks within a title, this is ok.
(The general rule is that quotation marks are reserved for quotations—that is, quoting others or for common sayings, mottos, etc. Within the text, quotations marks are also used when referring to an article or chapter title, or a section of your document.)
  • No period after the title.
  • Spelling out words fully in titles is recommended (rather than acronyms).

2. By Author (i.e., You)

  • Type your Given Name(s) Surname
  • Us the same name on all documentation

3. Your Previous Degree(s)

(NB. The degree is only abbreviated on the Title Page [B.Sc., M.A., Ph.D., etc.] and not on any other forms/documents--"Masters" and  "Doctorate" are not acceptable on any documentation.)

  • Most recent degree is first.
  • Each degree must fit on one line.
  • Use the short-form/abbreviated versions for the actual degrees [B.Sc., M.A., Ph.D., etc.]
Use punctuation as indicated below (be sure to use periods and commas as indicated)
If from a foreign university, please consult them for the appropriate short-form degree abbreviation.
  • The discipline is not necessary (e.g., Communications)--see examples below--leave this out if a degree line becomes 2 lines.
  • City or State is only needed for universities that stipulate cities in their names--put these in brackets--leave this out if the line becomes 2 lines.
  • Only include country IF there is a university with the same name in another country.
  • Spell out the institution.
