Thesis Requirements: Appendices

  • Appendices are optional, they are supplemental to a thesis in nature and, therefore, they need to come after the references/bibliography.  (Generally, a thesis should be able to stand without it's appendices. If you're not sure whether something should be in the text or an appendix, ask your supervisor as content is always up to the supervisor.  Many do include interview questions/questionnaires...if not your's these require permission.)
  • Whenever possible, include your appendices in your thesis file (this page directs you to other resources that may be helpful to you).
  • The contents could include participant letters, questionnaires, tables, figures, forms, etc.; CDs/DVDs; extra-large (11" x 17" bi-fold) pages; Excel data files.

1. Participant letters, questionnaires, tables, figures, forms, etc.

Rather than paste into your thesis and reformat, it is often easier make these files into images.  For including PDFs (images, questionnaires, forms, etc., start from 3 below).

  1. Arial is the best font for representing data in tables and figures, molecules, and in equations.
  2. Convert or scan the original documents to high-quality or press-quality PDFs.
  3. Convert to high-quality JPGs.
  4. Crop the margins off each JPG.
  5. If images are landscaped, rotate these so the top is on the left.
  6. Headings (e.b., Appendix A. ....Questionnaire) must be put into your thesis so they generate into the Table of Contents. These can be left off the original--unless someone else holds copyright to and has given you permission to use their questionnaire in which case you need it in both places.
  7. Insert the images onto the pages in your thesis.

See the images page for more info on resolution and quality.  Come to a Theses: Tables, Images, PDFs, High-Quality Print workshop which demonstrates how to do these.

NB. Except for the required documentation (1 Approval page and 1 PCL page), signatures cannot be included in theses (on forms, letters, etc.) elsewhere—how to block these out is covered in this workshop as well.

2. CDs/DVDs

  1. Include as your last Appendix (with the exception of bi-fold pages).
  2. Begin with the heading (e.g., Appendix C. DVD) on the page, followed by any credits, a description of the contents and, if included, a list of files and explanation (if applicable).
  3. See this page regarding DVDs, conversions for online submissions, and filesize.

3. Extra-large Bi-fold pages

Usually large landcaped tables can be created as mentioned in 1 above, yet extra-large 11" x17" pages might be needed for flowcharts, posters, etc.--these must be included as the last Appendix of your thesis--see instructions on this page.
