Help and Support Services for Theses

Help and Support Services are for those having problems with their theses,
which they have formatted using a Library MS Word template (old or new).
LaTeX users click here.

The Assistant for Theses cannot give one-on-one tutoring on how to use the MS Word template or review theses prior to submission.

So before requesting an appointment, please go through the items below.

  1. If you are having issues with your document, please see the Thesis Template Resources and Access table
—there are some answers for troubleshooting problems in the Help & Documentation column.

  2. For those already using a Library thesis template (received from May 2011 onward) Workshops are offerred on "Template Fine-tuning and Trouble-shooting" and "Theses: Tables, Images, PDFs, High-Quality Print."
Workshops are listed in the calendar below, but you must register via the SLC's Workshops page.
Also see the Help & Documentation column at http://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/writing/theses.
--however if you are using an older template from 2010 or before, continue with 4 below.

  3. For those new to the template, the "Thesis Submission & Template" Workshop is the one to get you started--and this workshop is now available online. Workshops are listed in the calendar below, but you must register via the SLC's Workshops page.

  4. Prior to submission, to determine whether your document has issues that may be unknown to you,
please see Step 1--and the links within Step 1--of the 3-Steps to Submission.

  5. If after trying the above avenues for support you are still in need of help, please email () as outlined below.
    Include:
  • the issue(s) you are having—be specific,
  • attach your Word thesis document,
  • let me know where you are located
  • I will look at your document, and will get back to you asap.
  • If I determine a telephone appointment or a one-on-one in-person session is necessary, please send me the day/time you'd like to meet.

Please be aware that I am in Mondays to Thursdays.

Appointments sometimes run into overtime, so you may need to wait a bit.  Thanks (in advance) for your patience.

The Thesis Office is room number 724 on the 7th floor of the WAC Bennett Library on the SFU Burnaby campus.
